Thanks for posting. It's a very nice picture and the blur is just right to add to the story but not to be distracting. With a focal length to entrance pupil diameter ratio of 45, the 90 isolates the subject better than the 75. I kept the 90, gave the 75 back today. I wanted more reach and the focal length of 90 starts to have less distortion, too.

I'll show a couple at some point just for OOF rendering with these two 75s taken today.  :)

Superb, Don!  (Did you keep the SL 50 1.4?)

Rob

Yeah... right now I have the 50, 75 and 90.

Some stuff needs to go... 90 is a bit long for my style. I do the love the isolation though.

I'm thinking the 50 and 75 will stay.... or NOT :)

First world problems.

What did you keep??

I'm a perpetual work in progress.

Still have the SL and SL 50 1.4, Noctilux, R 80 1.4, Voigtlander 15mm. I am 'exploring' the TL zooms and primes as options for the SL because of their size.  Also, exploring Leica medium format. I'm trying to find a S to L adapter to use the S lenses on the SL.  (Purchased one from Leica and it caused an electrical short on my SL, and then the Leica store's SL, so Leica is in the process of replacing my SL with a cpo unit.)

I am tempted by the SL 75 and SL 90, but should probably try my S lenses first.  A while back I demo-ed the S 70 on the SL at the Leica store and the images were fabulous.  It is certainly a much less expensive way to go than new SL lenses, albeit the S lenses certainly focus much more slowly.

Not sure which direction I'm headed at the moment . . . but am enjoying the ride.

75 @ F2

@Chaemono... I'm doing the opposite. Keeping 75 and selling 90. If anyone is interested in a 90... PM me.

New75-8.JPG

The 90 mm focal length starts to be perfect for headshots and is often too tight and painful as a general walk around lens. Sometimes the reach does comes in handy, though.

I had only borrowed the 75 Summicron-SL. I did keep the other 75 shown in the picture above. I use it as a general walk around lens. I love the combination of sharpness and OOF rendering. It has beautiful blur. Sort of like the Apo 50 Summicron-M except that it isolates the subject more. I reject the notion that 75 mm are for creative headshots to get only one eye in focus. It’s no coincidence that other manufacturers start their portraits lenses at 85 mm and above. With a relative aperture of f/1.4 and a focal length of 85 mm the Sony FE 85/1.4 GM results in a total aperture above 60 and the Nikon 105/1.4 has one of 75. They both should have thinner DOF than the 75 Noctilux and be more suited for portraits. Any lens can be used for portraits, of course, but distortion starts to become less of an issue at 85 mm and above. That’s one reason I kept the 90 and have a 75. :)

BTW, Don. See here under 'Notation for relative apertures' why “F2" is wrong: https://www.nayuki.io/page/absolute-and-relative-lens-apertures. You mean, of course,  f/2

"The lowercase italic f is a variable that denotes the physical quantity called focal length. The slash indicates division – e.g. f/2 is mathematically equivalent to f ÷ 2,... (If italics are unavailable, it’s acceptable to write f/2)."

Now that we've established that one needs a 90 and a 75 how about the 50 Summilux-SL. Arguably, if one doesn't absolutely need the special 3D effect that this lens creates against a buttery smooth background, then the 50 is not necessarily a keeper in this collection. This thread made me take out my 50 Summilux-SL today and shoot it for a few hours in the City. I admit, I don't need it but I'll keep it. What do I get out of it? The pleasure of using it.

This nice gentleman allowed me to get close which one often needs to do with the 50 Summulix-SL. He was playing and singing old Rhythm and Blues songs on a warm late summer day.

And now a very gracious lady. Angelika Tampier or, as she is known when she dresses up in black, Angela Spook is an artist, painter, author. Among many things, she makes beautiful little oil paintings on postcards that she sells for a few hours on a famous boulevard in Dusseldorf next to fashion showrooms and luxury retail stores. She has regular customers who love these cards and keep coming back to buy them. She is very passionate about her work and very kind to pose for a picture here. Thank you so much.

Here are some samples with the 90 Summicron-SL now. As others have pointed out, it's really a portrait lens. I can't post any head shots but I shot some different models today. For sharpness, shallow DOF, blur, and zero CA/PF (none removed in post).
