Frosty87 Posted August 17, 2018 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, I've been saving up for the M10. I live in Vancouver, B.C and at my local camera store that has a Leica Boutique, the price is $9350 CAD + Tax. All it in will cost $10,472. This will get me the official Canadian Leica Warranty (I am assuming) On eBay, there are many sellers from Hong Kong Camera stores selling brand new Leica M10's in USD. After covnersion it's around $8900 CAD. I've purchased new cameras from grey market over seas sellers before. I usually pay a custom fee but generally no additional taxation. I am expecting the all in price of the eBay new M10 to be perhaps $9500. This is an almost $1k in savings. Not sure if I should go this route or just save a bit more and buy it locally. I am unsure how warranty would work if buying a new Leica from overseas? Just a note, there are many reputable Leica sellers from Hong Kong. This would not be a 'fake' Leica at all. It would be the same as if I travelled to Hong Kong and bought it new from their stores there. Any thoughts?
Advertisement Posted August 17, 2018 Posted August 17, 2018 Hi Frosty87, Take a look here Canadian - Where to buy. eBay or In-store. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
magixaxeman Posted August 17, 2018 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2018 I have a policy of not buying grey imports, the primary reason being that in the UK the customer is the importer and thus legally responsible to pay all duty and taxes on the camera they import, companies who say they pay the tax lie, they don't declare the good they are sending properly in order to avoid it attracting tax, the long and short of this is if I male the purchase from a grey company I am guilty of avoiding paying tax. Secondly and just as importantly these companies like Panamoz (grey import sellers) are putting local camera shops out of business, they just cant compete with the prices. So if it was me I'd do what I always have done and source the camera from a dealer in my own country and preferably a local one.
LeicaTobin Posted August 17, 2018 Share #3 Posted August 17, 2018 Call Jean in Montreal. He will look after you and always is there for his customers. 26 Notre-Dame Est Montréal T: 514-875-5110 Mon - Fri: 9-18h Sat: 10-17h https://shop.camtecphoto.com/en/Leica Sometimes trying to save money costs you more in the long run. earleygallery Posted August 17, 2018 Share #4 Posted August 17, 2018 I am unsure how warranty would work if buying a new Leica from overseas? Any thoughts? Your warranty will be with the seller, or alternatively Leica will take warranty claims directly (assuming you register your purchase with them). The 'risk' is the additional costs involved in sending your camera to Hong Kong or Germany for any warranty issues.

Just my thoughts Cheers, Tobin I also recommend Jean if you decide buying in Canada. I bought my Leica MP A La Carte film camera from him. Downtown Camera in Toronto is another good option. Even thought both their price for M10 ($9530) is higher than Broadway Camera ($9350), but the tax is only 5% compare to 12% in BC. The total will be $1006.5 plus free shipping which saves you $465.5 compare to buying in Vancouver. Edited August 18, 2018 by sunnymoone
250swb Posted August 18, 2018 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2018 If you have a local Leica store I wouldn't dream of even buying from another dealer in Canada never mind from Hong Kong. Simple reason is for any problem, you take your camera or lens back to your local store, hand it over and say 'it doesn't work' and they take care of everything for you. scott kirkpatrick Posted August 18, 2018 Share #7 Posted August 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Instead of flying to Hong Kong, you could rent a postoffice box in Point Roberts, Washington, US, which is about half an hour's drive south of Vancouver. That is probably the safest way to deal with EBay or Asian sellers at your location, since there is still no import duty or local taxation. Purchases from US sellers would then have US warranties. Letin Posted August 18, 2018 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2018 I bought all my gear from Downtown Camera Toronto. 5% taxes shipping to BC and they are very reputable. I can hook you up with a guy I trust buying Leica gear. PM me
Frosty87 Posted August 20, 2018 Author Share #10 Posted August 20, 2018 Thanks for all the feedback folks. I've decided to buy from my local Leica Boutique here in Vancouver. Should make any future issues with the camera easier to resolve. Just gotta decide if it's the M10 or the M10-P to be announced tomorrow!
howard_cummer Posted August 22, 2018 Share #11 Posted August 22, 2018 Hi there, Another Canadian alternative. The Camera Store in Calgary stocks Leicas. They list the M10 for C$9489. There is no provincial sales tax in Alberta - only the 5% GST (C$474.45) for a total price of C$9,963.45. The Camera Store gives you free shipping. Good hunting.
sunnymoone Posted August 22, 2018 Share #12 Posted August 22, 2018 Thanks for all the feedback folks. I've decided to buy from my local Leica Boutique here in Vancouver. Should make any future issues with the camera easier to resolve. Just gotta decide if it's the M10 or the M10-P to be announced tomorrow! I sent email to three stores this morning asking the availability of the M10-P. - Broadway Camera is taking deposits for the camera now, the estimate time of arrival should be within next week or so. - Downtown Camera in Toronto could supply the black finish in 3 days, but the silver finish will probably be available next month. - Camtec Photo in Montreal has one black finish and one silver finish in stock. I bought the black one and it should arrive this Friday according to Canada Post. Happy shopping!

lanetomlane Posted August 23, 2018 Share #14 Posted August 23, 2018 Would it not be cheaper to drive to Seattle and go to either Glazers or the Leica Store in Bellevue?
