…every time I start thinking about getting an M Leica (I had an M8 for 6 months some 5 years back, awesome camera, bit cumbersome to shoot in some ways) I just look at some of the images I make with the D3 and think I’m already getting the Leica “glow” so why not just be happy with it…..and it has autofocus!

So, after revisiting this thread, I decided to bring the D3 out for the weekend, paired with either the 25 1.4 or the 14-150 zoom. The 14-150 is a really nice lens, but it’s slow and can be limiting. However, the 25 D Summilux is my favorite lens of all time. The results from that combo can humble my M setup. It’s a fantastic camera.

The Digilux 3 was my first Leica as well, and upon reviewing the files from this weekend, I realize I could have stuck with the D3 as my principal camera for a bit longer.

Also, thank you so much for the kind words on the D2 project. It’s been very rewarding going through archives and seeing how quickly time passes and things change. It’s really helped me really stay present, which was an unexpected benefit!

Happy to hear you dusted off your D3! Indeed  the Summilux D 25mm is a totally awesome lens. I have one too, I use it on my D3 mostly when I’m on wedding shoots, as a third camera in certain situations. In good light, the resulting images just have a glow and sharpness unlike anything else. I also adapt this Summilux to my Oly EM-1X’s and my goodness this combo just sings gloriously too. I use it all day long except when I pop it back on the D3 for some select moments of the wedding day.

The 25mm (50mm fov) on the D3 when I’m walking out and about for casual shooting is a little limiting, so I often throw on my Sigma 10-20mm f4.5-5.6 in those situations, the lens which the seller included when I bought the D3. It’s a pretty good lens IMO, better than I expected. I do want to get the Vario-Elmar 14-50mm at some point for the telephoto focal range.

Yes, I’m going to check in on the D2 thread. Many of those images there look amazing and I’m not surprised that thread has more action than the D3 thread. That D2 is a masterpiece, IMO. A little shy on the megapixels for me to use professionally which is why I went for the D3. At 7.5mp and 4:3 ratio it reaches the required threshold by a hair. But yes, I really feel that the D2/D3 image quality rivals some of the M’s…..and for a lot less money!

I would bet that if you offered couples a retro look and feel they would eat it up. Kids are turning to DV for an aesthetic these days. There may be a market there.

Re: the 25D on the e-M1 x, I completely agree. I look back at those images and sometimes it feels like they rendered at times like medium format. It also worked really well with the original em1.

However, the 14-50 Leica will NOT work with the e-M1 x. It is the only time I ever saw a lens not function on a body. Very disappointing as I think that would be a killer setup.

Hi Lemalk, interesting you mention offering couples the "retro look". A couple of months ago the owner of the studio I freelance shoot weddings with mentioned to all his shooters that young couples today are looking for more artistic and retro images. That was music to my ears. I had been doing just that with my D3 + 'lux 25D and getting images with that desired Leica "glow". But I caught a very bad case of "red dot" fever a month ago.....again.....and I up and went and bought an M8 (2nd time owning one) plus a Zeiss 28mm and Canon 50mm 1.8 LTM. That certainly relieved my red dot G.A.S.!!

I thought I was being clever using my "vintage" D3 and getting sweet images, but oh boy, the M8 with these lenses takes the whole "Leica look" to the next level. It's so amazing to be shooting with an M body again! I've been practicing manual focus techniques again in preparation of using it in place of the D3 as a third "specialty" camera on my next wedding in a couple of weeks. Can't wait. If the studio owner wants more "artistic" shots, that's what they're going to get!

Keeping the D3 for now, and moving the 'lux 25D to be permanently glued to one of my EM1X's. You're right, this combo renders like medium format and IMO is the biggest secret underrated monster set up I've ever used. Thank you for mentioning the 14-50mm D lens will not work adapted to the EM1X. That is a shame because even though I only use primes on event gigs, for personal or casual photography, having that zoom range with the (Pana)Leica glass would be a killer set up.

I'll still take the D3 out from time to time on walks and day trips to NYC......I'd like to keep this thread alive and it seems I'm the only in recent times to post any D3 images here. It's still a wonderful camera and as of right now, I can't see myself parting with it although the newly acquired M8 is overshadowing it to a large extent.

Cheers!

I don’t blame you. I’ve been shooting my M8 recently, and I have such an emotional connection to that camera. It’s been through decades and life changes since I’ve owned it. Congratulations. The M8’s color palette is so unique I am certain it’ll give a shoot a different feel.

There is a 14-150 PanaLeica that works really well on the EM1x and from what I can recall, they were going for a very reasonable price recently.

Every now and then, 3-5 times a year, I take the Digilux 3 with me. Here I was at a playground near an asparagus farm, because of the color scheme, in wonderful weather. I'm always impressed by the CCD sensor and its Leica look. Please keep in mind that this camera is in its 22nd year. All shots with the Kit Zoom.
