I've never played golf, but I have slept in a Holiday Inn Express, and so I'm an expert. :-) . To me, it's not the lack of spikes, but that his stance is way too open for that type of shot--feet should be closer together so he can keep his hands in more and therefore be more in control of a complicated shot.
