Something I have been wanting to try for quite some time.

100mm apo macro, at full aperture. Used my cooled astro camera (designed specifically for astro use).

17 exposures, each 30 secs each. Calibrated with darks, flats, and biases, then stacked.

I was aiming to shoot a heap more, but high cloud closed it all down.

This was with a near full moon present (just came in and processed it).

Needs a wider field of view perhaps, and a moonless night, AND a dark site, my backyard has two street-lights pointed at where I took this. Such is life in the city.

Looks pretty good to me.  With a 30 second exposure, is your camera on some sort of tracking device to prevent star trails?  I used the 100APO for comet Neowise and it worked pretty good, but nothing fancy.  No tracking or stacking.

Thanks Aram. Yes, (should have mentioned it perhaps). On a tracking mount, with a guiding camera and scope, so full on guiding. I tried a few at 300 secs, but the local conditions precluded this, and I settled on a series at 30 secs instead.

Angénieux 35-70mm R f2.5-3.3 R lens (c. 1980s) / Leica CL / URTH R to L adapter / Berlebach MULDA Mini Wooden Tripod with levelling head / Lastolite reflector.

Laney Leica Collectors' Guide 2nd Edition page 320 illustrates only the 'complex' 15 element Angénieux Zoom 45-90mm f2.8 R lens which also appears in the Leica Pocket Books. However, Laney also 'describes' two other Angénieux R zoom lenses as follows:

"It appears that two other Angénieux zoom lenses were supplied in Leica mounts, but not catalogued by Leitz, and may only have been sold in the American market. These were a 35-70mm, f3.5 and a 70-210mm f3.5. There were also two fixed focus lenses: a 180mm f2.3 Apo and a 200mm f2.8"

Furthermore, Erwin Puts Leica Lens Compendium 1st Edition states on page 36 when discussing Leitz' early strategies ref zoom lenses and Angénieux:

"The company offered three versions: 1:2.8 / 45-90mm, 1:2.5 35-70mm and 1:3.5/ 70-210mm. The cooperation was quite limited. Leitz allowed Angénieux to use the bayonet-mount of the Leicaflex and promoted the sales of these lenses".

Puts also writes in more detail ref Leitz' 'concerns' ref the 'bulk' and 'optical quality' of zoom lenses in 1969 – prior to the adoption of Minolta zoom designs.

Whatever Leitz' views in the late 1960s, nowadays the Angénieux R zooms are very sought after and command premium prices.

Dunk,

I am very tempted to get the larger Berlebach Mini Tripod L with levelling. Especially for when I am using my none too feather weight Hasselblad with one of the longer either Leica or Contax 645 lenses. There is a lot of bleating on the Hasselblad forum that the X2D has no remote release other than using a mobile phone but really I just usually use the self timer set to 3 seconds and the regular shutter button. I already have one of the larger 3 section Berlebach wooden tripods (a Christmas present from my wife many years ago), with levelling and extending central tube at my French house, where it generally sits with my Televid 77 spotting scope on it and I will wait until I get down there in June to avoid the dreaded VAT plus all sorts of other processing and collection fees if sending from Germany to the UK.

Wilson, I have three Berlebach wooden tripods. The 'mini' MULDA with levelling head is used frequently – especially when crawling around at ground level when visiting nature reserves – and being just 12" in length, it's easy to slip in the top of a medium size camera bag. The 'levelling head' serves as a tripod head and levelling head.

My HD Berlebach tripod is enormous and very heavy and requires use of my Eckla trolley seat if walking any distance. HD Berlebach was a lucky eBay buy and shipped from Bavaria 'in pieces' to reduce shipping bulk.

Berlebach HD wooden tripod / Jobu gimbal /  Leitz 800mm R / Leica SL 601 / Leitz 2x APO extender / Manfrotto 'steadier' in use at Alexandra Palace.

The Berlebach HD tripod has a 'built-in' levelling head on the centre column; it's design is a work of art. A friend bought the exact same model from the same eBay dealer which was shipped to my address (to save shipping costs) with my No. 2 Berlebach – the No. 2 is a much smaller / lesser HD Berlebach. I assembled my friend's HD Berlebach and was so impressed by its build quality, decided to try and acquire one myself. A few weeks later the same Bavarian eBay dealer listed the above example which I acquired as a BIN.

  • 3 weeks later...

From a recent (last week) trip to Melbourne. I wanted to mix some film and digital, so took my R8 and 21~35mm R, plus the 50mm Summilux R, and for digital took my Hasselblad X1Dii (with 45mm F4).

In the past I have used an old Nikkor 28mm shift lens on the X1D, mainly to use the shift when in an alleyway without the ability to move about too much. The fact it's a shift lens also adds some flexibility on the M/F sensor. Also I use it for keeping the verticals decent while shooting buildings.

However while in Melbourne I also tried the R 21~35, and was pleasantly surprised. Very. Yes, at 21mm I could see the vignetting from the lens hood, and probably should have taken it off and tried again. Two attached shots are of a lovely high-rise skyline while we were at the Queen Victoria Market in the weekend. Wider of the two is at 21mm (and I cropped the hood vignette out), and the other is at about 28mm.

Same details as the previous shots. Very slight crop to reduce the vignetting coming through.

And the last one. This was mid-morning, an iconic railway station (for me) and try as I did I found it hard to tame the saturation of the colours. It reminded me of using a polarising filter (nothing used for this shot though).

X1Dii and R-21~35 at about 28mm.
