During weekend 23/24 June, I visited the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club Annual Rally at Burghley House, Stamford, Lincs., UK  and as usual there were many interesting cars to admire and photograph. The first day's photos were spoilt by mystery camera sensor soiling and resultant hazy images … but I've managed to rescue a few pics. Amongst the more interesting cars was a restored 1914 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost 'C-Series' Chassis Nr. 67RB with Kellner of Paris 'Torpedo Phaeton' coachwork. The original coachwork was 'lost' after the first Portuguese owner fitted a shooting brake body - but in 2009 the original body was refitted after being discovered in the Netherlands by Steve Litton of Vintage & Auto Rebuilds Inc., Ohio. The firm completed a concours standard chassis/body restoration and in 2015 the car was awarded top honours at the prestige Pebble Beach USA Concours d'Elegance. The car was exhibited at the RREC Rally in the Jonathan Wood Vintage and Thoroughbred Restorations Ltd marquee where visitors were fascinated by its special 'furniture' … please read the photo captions to eventually view same … and which obviously impressed the judges and resulted in yet another Concours d'Elegance award and rosette as shown in the final two photos.

Many RR enthusiasts were dressed very smartly for the rally but what is drawing this gentleman's attention?

…  a burled walnut cocktail cabinet in the luxurious passenger compartment … just the job for a day out at a 'point to point' meeting …  or Ascot … or the Epsom Derby   ;)

Never was a truer word said than, "They just don't make 'em like they used to !"… But maybe the exhibitor should have displayed some suitable flowers atop the side cupboards?

And I wonder if the chauffeur was offered a glass on a hot day?

And was he also 'butler for the day'?

A comparable vintage RR Silver Ghost of this quality and proven provenance would cost upwards of c.£1.5 million

One thing's  for sure … I could never afford a vintage RR

However, one of my prized bookshop finds is a copy of Kenneth Ullyett's 'The Book of the Silver Ghost' complete with a facsimile edition of "Instructions for the Care of 40-50 H.P Six Cylinders Rolls Royce Cars 1909 ". The owner's manual was originally priced at 21/-  i.e. 1 Guinea … it's a fascinating read.

Just checked the original price of a 'Torpedo Phaeton' Silver Ghost in 1914  … £1314-7s-8d   plus : Bulb horn £4-2s-6d, Lifting jack £1-11s, Tyre pump £1-18s, Tool roll £3, Tyre repair kit 8s-0d, petrol funnel 6s-0d, and number plates £1-17s-6d

That's all folks … Hope you enjoyed the photos.  i might post a few more pics of other RR cars seen at the rally.

Best wishes

dunk

PS: All photos taken with Leica SL / 24-90mm    .. apologies for 'hazy sensor images '  somehow sensor became covered in a hazy film … responded to a wet clean next day.
