Manual focussing

Am I missing a trick? I wanted to set my 18-56mm lens to infinity manually to take a moon shot, but the focussing ring is continuous and there is no stop. The focussing peaking didn’t appear to work either but perhaps that was due to the low light conditions. So, how do I set the focus manually to infinity?

Magnify 6X and focus on the moon's craters or its edge.  Or find a building that is several km away and has lights to use as a target.

That wasn’t possible with my scene as the moon was above nearby trees. I still don’t understand the principle of the continuous focus ring, I’ve never experienced this before.

Almost every autofocus lens has a continuously moving focus ring. Only manual lenses have a stop point.

 

Just look through the camera and focus until its in focus? Using the magnification? If your subject it at infinity surely you could have just focussed on your subject?

And manual lenses with an infinity stop frequently need a small nudge to get the best focus.  Or allow focusing a bit past infinity so that they will still work at high temperatures.
