I was planning to use this camera without any special care and letting the age show on the body.... now my problem is that this one looks better than my (very well kept) M240 body !

To protect or not to protect.. is the question. :)

That is a beautiful camera! You'll have to decide how you want to treat it, I bought mine with much more patina so I don't worry about it, but also, I have never bought something with the idea of keeping it pristine, it will get used and will develop the marks of that use.

Aye, T'is nice alright.

As Mike says, use it. OK, don't abuse it but slight marks etc add to the experience.

It appears to have a few very slight nicks near the film counter anyway, so get a lens on it and some film in it and go.

Beautiful.

Nice camera!  I am sure you will enjoy it.  The viewfinder is the most elegant of all the M's including the digital ones.  I never got on with an M3 but the M2 and I have clicked since about 1980 when I bought my first one.

A friend of mine who shoots for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and is pretty much a gear head showed me his kit for after the "neutron bomb" goes off and shorts all electronics.  It consisted of a pair of M2's with 35/90 mounted and a big stash of TriX.  He says he can cover any event in history with those two cameras.

Did some framelines analysis for 28,35,40,50mm (far objects). Compared the actual picture (using M240) with M2's viewfinder and did overlay in photoshop. It turns out that

For far objects>

- 28mm: I can use the entire view

- 35mm: I will get little outside frameline

- 40mm: Very close to 35mm << I will use  40mm summicron-C mostly which is filed (by me) to get 35mm framelines. It so happens that on my M2 I can see both 35 and 50 framelines with my 40 summicron-c. Maybe I didn't file all the way. I like it this way and not going to change it. It brings up 35mm lines crealy on M240.
- 50mm; framelines are mostly accurate

Now it is time to load my first film (400 Tri-x) :)

View thru M2 OVF with my 40summicron-c attached. Note that both 35 and 50mm lines are visible.

With actual frameline overlay (used actual pictures from M240 at various focal length to calculate the actual framelines)

I like ever ready black case from M4-2 time. It has removable top, which protects it in the bag. And for taking pictures, while top is removed, the holding part is giving extra protection by its bulk. I use it if M-E and M4-2 are together on me.

Without it cameras bumps by bare metal to each over. The only downside is less easy film advance. Easier to do by double stroke.

When I found something so endearing I bought two and put the best aside.

This is very useful, unfortunately for a glasses wearer the entire frame is hard to see. This is why I chose an M2 over an M3, the 50mm framelines on the M2 suit glasses wearers much better.

I will put a half case and use it regularly. After shooting half roll in one day, I can see the appeal of these cameras. The shutter is sublime!

Thanks. I will add a half case.

Although, I looked at the original Leica case for around $20 and that doesn't look too bad either.

It is 20$ original, old Leica full case I have and talk about. M2/3 are brown and top is not detachable.

M4-2 are black and top Is detachable. It is half-case then with its own strap. Better than fancy half-case, no strap, not Leica ones in terms of camera protection.

Nice example. Mine was (is) also in very good condition but I bought it to use and so I do. I'm careful with my stuff and even though I don't use an ERC with it, it's just as clean as when I bought it.

An ERC or half case is a good idea though, mostly to protect the camera when being carried around rather than in actual use.

Congratulations on the new M2 and enjoy.

For protection, the Artisan & Artist cases are nice soft leather, fit very well and not to bulky.

Actually I found my solution. I had made a soft case for M9 using my old Levis 501 jeans. It is a simple design that just wraps around the camera. It doesn't fall off since there are hooks around strap lugs (stuck by velcro so that I can remove easily. I had also created a pocket for M9 battery which I can use now for extra rolls. This case was not being used since I sold my M9 and moved to M240 (I created a "more refined" hand made neoprene soft case for that :) ). I remember about the M9 case today and pulled it out. It fits M2 perfectly.

In shooting mode. The case is held by thin red straps around side lugs. They are velcroed for quick removal. You can see the pocket for accessories (lens cap, extra roll).

Finally front flap goes over and closes with velcro. Looks like a purse and I just hope it doesn't look girly. I added red piping since there is Leica inside.  :)

Did I mention that I am having a blast shooting with it! Half roll done already. :D

Shot my first test roll of Tri-X and largely satisfied. I have one issue for which I asked in another thread here.

Few test shots with different shutterspeeds.

Lenses: 40summicron-C, 28 cron ASPH and 50 lux ASPH (in order)
