sarkleshark Posted April 23, 2018 Share #1  Posted April 23, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do I understand this right? : Fill flash on the SL with the SF40 : Have the SL in A mode, SF40 on TTL and Adjust the right dial to positive value (say + 1.0 ) to add fill in flash. That is , does adjusting the right dial on the flash change the exposure setting on the camera or just add additional flash? thanks. sillbeers15 Posted April 23, 2018 Share #2  Posted April 23, 2018 (edited) When it comes to flash usage, you must always remember you’re dealing with two different exposures. The ambient and the flash exposure. It get’s tricky when you set your exposure to A on your camera. Before the flash is turned on, your camera will provide a shutter speed to match the appeture you’ve selected (at a certain ISO). When you turn on your flash, The camera will change the shutter speed to the flash sync speed and that will change your ambient exposure.  The exposure of the subject by the flash is determined by the flash through the camera on TTL setting. I do not have the SF40, but for SF58 I would adjust the fill flash exposure compensation via the flash. I would first of all set my camera to M instead of A. This way, I can fix the ambient light exposure and I can safely push my flash to sync up to 1/250sec before the need to call for HSS setting on the flash. sarkleshark Posted April 23, 2018 Author Share #3  Posted April 23, 2018 I think i understand: SL on manuel settings : Set camera exposure iso, aperature and shutter speed to within flash sync speed. This is for background exposure. then turn on flash with flash compensation at -.5 or-1.0 to fill in. thanks
FlashGordonPhotography Posted April 24, 2018 Share #4 Â Posted April 24, 2018 (edited) For the SF40 FEC is done via the flash. The setting in the camera does nothing. Changes in the flash FEC show up in the cameras display. For the SF 58 (discontinued). Same as above but you can't see the FEC set on the camera display. For the SF26. FEC is set via the camera. The flash has no FEC dial. For the SF64 (discontinued) FEC can be set either from the camera or the flash and any change will be reflected on the other. Â Not 100% sure about the upcoming SF60 yet but it's likely to be similar to the SF 64 as the SF60 probably follows the Nissin i60 behaviour. bgreig Posted February 6, 2020 Share #5  Posted February 6, 2020 Just to be sure (I am using an SF40 on a Leica Q: To get fill flash I leave the camera aperture alone (A or any f-stop) and increase the SF40 flash compensation dial to -.5 or 1?

I control them via SF-C1 commander. Not sure I’ve seen A ( need to check)?
