Do you mind if I ask your opinion of the Ultron lens? I'm about to buy a 35mm M mount and I've narrowed my choices down to Zeiss Boigon or Voightlander Ultron or Nokton.

Do you mind if I ask your opinion of the Ultron lens? I'm about to buy a 35mm M mount and I've narrowed my choices down to Zeiss Boigon or Voightlander Ultron or Nokton.

The Voigtlander 35mm 1.7 lens is fantastic. It’s not just good in its own right but it’s one of the best 35mm lenses in the M mount currently.

 

The Norton gives you 1.2 and a beautiful ethereal rendering. However the sides don’t sharpen up until f8 and there is somefield curvature across the range. It’s heavy as well although the handling is beautiful

 

The 1.7 by contrast is flatter field, sharp from go and even sides. It is also very light for a f1.7 lens

 

The Zeiss f2 has a slightly colder rendering and is even more flat field then the 1.7. However it suffers from a distinct drop off in contrast at f2 and veiling haze. I would say at f2 and below the Voigtlander is much better but for flat field architecture only,if you count pixels, the Zeiss is slightly better

 

Of course the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 is the sharpest and flattest field lens for the M mount and probably across all makes of cameras. It’s downsize is odd shape, overall size and cost.

 

For me the best 35mm lens is the voigtlander 1.7, but if I could own two I would also have the 1.2 for very dark, especially with film. On the other hand if I was doing critical architecture studio work or I would have the Voigtlander 1.7 for walk about and the Zeiss 1.4 for critical photos
