stuny Posted July 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Malta is the main island of this nation’s island group. Just to its west, accessible via ferry is a smaller gem of an island, Gozo. On the flat hilltop in Rabat (which means “city”, the original name for what has been called Victoria since the Queen’s Golden Jubilee) is a citadel built to protect the inhabitants. Its walls were probably not impregnable to a full military assault, so the Knights of the Order of St. John reinforced them in 1565. Every night, Rabat’s inhabitants would go inside the citadel to survive any assault, which until 1637 was a regular occurrence, as the Turks raided the island for food, goods and people to sell into slavery. In one raid over 6,000 were taken, leaving just 300 who managed to evade capture. Dominating the citadel is the cathedral, designed by Lorenzo Gafa, and built between 1697 and 1711. This photo is in a rare moment when no tour groups were in the main plaza. More Gozo photos are on the 4th, 5th and 6th pages of Malta photo galleries on our site. azzo Posted July 6, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 6, 2007 Stuart, This is Superb ! Lovely angle, composition and light captured; and the lady going up the steps adds that touch to it. Well Done. Azzo
Photoskeptic Posted July 6, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 6, 2007 Stuart, nice composition. What lens did you use and did you have to do any compensation in PS?
stuny Posted July 6, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted July 6, 2007 Ivan - Thank you. John - Thank you. This photo and about 70% of the Malta photos is with the Digilux 2 shot in minimally compressed jpeg (the other 30% were R8/DMR RAW). I probably did just a TOUCH of exposure adjustment and just a TOUCH of sharpening, but I don't really recall.
JE Posted July 6, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 6, 2007 Stuart, your photos over the past few weeks have provided another side to what seems a very beautiful island..Very nice sky. And the composition is spot on...creating a theater-like atmosphere...did you have to wait long for the area to be empty? Jonathan

luigi bertolotti Posted July 6, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 6, 2007 Lot of compliments, Stuart : is very difficult to shot a pic like this (3 bulidings, the ladder...) in a way that you obtain a FINE VIEW... always one line or another that looks unstraight and disturbes the geometry... cood example of Architecture sht... you'd post it in the proper subforum... stuny Posted July 6, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted July 6, 2007 William, Marcus, Pter, Paul & Luigi - Thank you. Jonathan - Thank you. When we first arrived in the morning the light wasn't as good and more people were about. This shot is early afternnon when most people were eating or generally staying out of the sun, so after returning I only waited a few seconds, and the light was wonderful.. farnz Posted July 11, 2007 Share #16 Posted July 11, 2007 Well done, Stuart and your D2! Great use of line, shape and form to lead the eye around the image. It seems that the painter only had a ladder of a certain length... Pete.

stuny Posted July 11, 2007 Author Share #18 Posted July 11, 2007 Noriko & Brian - Thank you. Pete - Thank you. Actually, the painter didn't have a ladder, but his reach was pretty impressive (he was a tall orangutan working his way through university by taking odd jobs in medieval cities.)
