The authorities are well aware of this. There are many interceptions and arrests at main airports. In the USA the fine is 10.000 $ or 5000 $ if the offender is genuinely unaware. In a country like Kenia you will be in jail ( a place you don't want to be, if you are lucky you can buy your way into a first-class pig-sty, with only ten persons sharing a toilet bucket) whilst your case is sorted -slowly. It is not just Elephants. For instance, if you buy a pretty sea shell as a souvenir on holiday, chances are that it has been illegally harvested from a coral reef, adding to the destruction. If you get caught at the airport, you're (justly) in trouble. Using an Elephant leather bag indicates a lack of moral compass and is essentially the same as owning a dagger with a Rhino horn handle or ingesting ground-up Tiger genitals in attempt to please your wife. I don't blame the third-world locals trying to make a living by selling whatever they can get their hands on to feed their children. Perhaps a few strongly-worded notes to Adam might make a difference. I don't believe I've ever seen a more grotesque bag than those blue croc bags. The whole concept is disturbing, and on top of that, they look like the Queen Mother's purse, circa 1967. I’ve gone lukewarm over von Overgaard over the last few years , but this is the nail in the coffin for me.
