Don't really understand the purpose of these luxury bags in the first place - a regular (Leica) photographer won't use them since inconspicuous looking bags are much more preferred. Collectors with lots of money won't need them either since they are not carrying Leica camera and lenses with them around at all and rather keep them in a safe or on a shelf at home. So who is the target group?

Bizarrely, I think that Thorsten himself is the 'target group'.

This is vanity manufacturing in its purest form. The client is personal ego.

There’s a Daily Mail article about his wife, Joy Villa, that may help explain the target market. I’ll not post a link as it may get the post deleted, but let’s just say it’s an eye opener.

Well I don't expect he is counting on selling them by the container load. I expect his target are the new rich who cruise the mediterranean riviera and don't give a hoot about the environment and exploiting anyone "beneath" them. The kind of person who buys a Leica for his girl/boyfriends who in turn complains that it doesn't have a selfie stick or facebook.

I would think his perfect buyer would look something like Matteo Perin.

If you watch the very end of the video, he starts rambling a little bit about 'lifestyle' as a kind of watchword for how upper-crusty people try to justify their tastes for 'nice' things as some kind of actual ethos or capacity for discernment.

That's pretty much what this is about.

Well, I am not too familiar with Thorsten, I only watched a few of his Youtube videos in the past (unrelated to the bag stuff). So I don't want to judge him, but I don't think that this bag stuff is a good business idea the way he tries to sell it to the public. I can imagine that some high society guys might purchase them because it is "unique" (not in a good way unfortunately). But....IMO this is not well connected to Leica camera gear at all. In fact, it could be a counterproductive advertisement indirectly for Leica with Thorsten trying to venture into this new business direction.

I've just posted a note to Dr Kaufmann on his Facebook page;

Hi, many of us are outraged at Leica Ambassador Thorsten Overgaard's promotion of his range of Elephant and Crocodile skin camera bags for carrying Leica's. See the discussion on the forum here www.l-camera-forum.com/…/283052-luxury-camera-bags-by-thor…/

Is this endorsed by Leica?

Hi James, thinking about it you have to be signed into the forum to see the bar section, so it’s likely he won’t be able to see the thread. He still see your Facebook post obviously.

He does have an account here as it happens (can't remember his forum name but it's something anonymous) but doesn't seem to visit often. Much more active on FB.

Links to legitimate sites don’t get posts deleted. At worst the link.

He is a Member here. Posts as Overgaatd I believe.

Correction; Overgaard.

Indeed, he routinely posts to alert members regarding new articles on his site.

Any future posts will provide a good opportunity to express our opinions directly. Hopefully this is resolved before then.

I was referring to Dr Kaufmann.

Sorry.

Since Thorsten is a member here, shouldn't we send him a message to let him know how we feel?

I suppose it's something we could each do individually, and/or a group message might help?

The article in question contains a lot of references to religion, right wing politics and online adult sites. I think a link would seriously derail this thread.

The RFF thread on this same subject has been closed, apparently due to the ad hominem nature of some of the remarks there.  It's doubly important therefore that we steer clear of those things and keep to the message that our qualm is with trading in elephant products.
