Guest WPalank Posted July 6, 2007 Share #141 Posted July 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) But I am pencilled for a west to east coast photo trip from Seattle to Boston over that date. Hire cars and motels, Montana in the early fall, Chicago, the last bit of the USA I have yet to 'do'.t Tim, I hope you "pencilled in" San Francisco as well. We have bars here, just like Berlin! carstenw Posted July 6, 2007 Share #144 Posted July 6, 2007 ............. hey Carsten did I make no1 on the list or just a low 2 or 3?? :D I sometimes enjoy your posts, often they are just too hard to figure out, like modern art or something. The list is sorted alphabetically, btw, so you will need yet another account if you want to have a chance of being at the top of someone's list. mgcd Posted July 6, 2007 Share #145 Posted July 6, 2007 Sorry, somehow I got lost as to what the real issue is anymore. There have always been technically related images posted in the Customer, Digital Fora as well as the M8 subforum. What the objection is, at least in my case, is that it would be rather distasteful to have ALL images made with the M8 be only posted in the SUBforum. This comes from the premise that images are made by photographers and not by a camera. This is the Leica User Forum, not the M8 Forum. I, for one, would never take part in such a venture even for images I would make with the M8. That idea is just too daft to consider. Cheers,
plasticman Posted July 6, 2007 Share #146 Posted July 6, 2007 I'd find it easier to follow Guy's reasoning if the images posted were actually critiqued on a technical basis. As a particularly glaring example, take a look at the first image in this series. Now i felt that image deserved some serious technical consideration, as it contained a number of interesting artifacts that could be considered technical 'shortcomings' of the M8 or the photographer. But at times it seems to me that the M8 discussion degenerates into an 'old-boys-with-fast-cars' club, which is fine if dissenting voices are allowed to voice a contrary opinion as imants did in that thread. But as we all know, it led to a lot of unpleasantness. Now i'm absolutely not against the posting of images on this forum, but i do think that if it's done, people should be big enough to take criticism, on whatever grounds if it relates to the images. I think Andy misunderstood me above (though not wilfully!), when he quoted a sentence of mine which illustrated a point i was arguing against - i feel, like imants does, that people who don't like the rules here are free to set up their own forum elsewhere. stunsworth Posted July 6, 2007 Share #147 Posted July 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Imants your missing the whole point being made and that is who gives anyone the right to comment on a image when there not asking Guy, I'll make a prediction. If people didn't comment on photographs in the photographic forum the posting of photographs would dry up and it would become a dead forum. The _vast_ majority of people post to the forum _hoping_ to get comments. I'm sorry, but what seems to be happening is that you are presenting your opinion of what should happen in a forum that you admit you never post to - no problem with that, you are entitled to your opinion, but it's divorced from the reality of what actually happens I'm afraid. tashley Posted July 6, 2007 Author Share #148 Posted July 6, 2007 i feel, like imants does, that people who don't like the rules here are free to set up their own forum elsewhere. And I feel that they are entitled to raise for discussion whether those rules might benefit from a tweak. After all, as I pointed out above, there used not to be a dedicated sub-forum for the M8 and now there is: these lines can clearly be re-drawn as needs must. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree! tashley Posted July 6, 2007 Author Share #149 Posted July 6, 2007 Tim, Berlin is changing very rapidly. If you want to visit here at all, do so soon. It was one of the great deals of the century after the wall came down, and strangely, it is still rather affordable. In the 5 1/2 years I have been here though, the prices have risen sharply, so sooner is better than later. Oddly, the two places you have missed are two places I have been: Montana and Chicago In Montana, I recall getting a $10 speeding ticket, payable on the spot, for going way too fast, once upon a time, and in Chicago, be sure to visit the Art Institute and take pictures of The Loop. Thanks Carsten - actually I was going to get to Berlin this summer but plans changed! Right. I'm off to Ireland for the weekend, to do the unthinkable: take photos. Will I post them or not? Who knows? Who cares? Tim
Kent10D Posted July 6, 2007 Share #150 Posted July 6, 2007 But at times it seems to me that the M8 discussion degenerates into an 'old-boys-with-fast-cars' club, which is fine if dissenting voices are allowed to voice a contrary opinion There have been a few comments to this effect in this thread and on others, including the one referred to above. But I really don't see that dissenting opinions, as long as they are presented in a fair and civil manner, are suppressed anywhere on this forum. I think we have to differentiate between constructive criticism, which should be encouraged at all costs, and categorical dismissal of someone's efforts, which is the way some of the "criticism" reads, whether intentionally or not. To simply say "this photo is cr*p" (I'm not quoting, by the way) serves no other purpose than to start a fight. Terms like "mediocre" and "no photographic substance" were being slung about recently, with absolutely no why's or wherefore's to back them up. If someone says "I don't think this image succeeds because of such and such," I'm pretty sure that nobody will complain. It may be a purely semantic issue, but there are many people from many different linguistic and cultural backgrounds using the forum, so it might be wise to consider the possibility that the way we present opinions to our buddies at home might be highly offensive to some members of the forum. On the other hand, those of us on the receiving end might want to give perceived slights the benefit of the doubt. OK, the above rant is a little off topic for this thread, so I'll close by saying that I'm all for posting photos here as long as they're M8-related, and I'm all for criticism as long as it's constructive/productive. Cheers all, Kent.
Eoin Posted July 6, 2007 Share #151 Posted July 6, 2007 .....Right. I'm off to Ireland for the weekend,......Tim Tim, pack your rain gear, it has not stopped raining here since 30th May, I mean it rained every day since and the last week has been pretty bad. Saturday is forecast to be Dry but Sunday is a washout. Sorry, but at least the grass will be green:D
Arthur Winner Posted July 6, 2007 Share #152 Posted July 6, 2007 I know that forum guidelines are for images to be posted in the photo forum but I personally like it when people post images here, as long as they are M8 or M8-related. Keeping tabs on too many forums is time-consuming and the more I get to know the people here, the more I enjoy seeing their images and reading their opinions as part of the same process of communication. Does anyone else feel the same way? Tim I'm with you Tim. Being an M8 user (if only recently) I love seeing images taken by others and where better to show them than in this section dedicated to the M8? total_recall Posted July 6, 2007 Share #153 Posted July 6, 2007 the question remains if the M8 is such a great cam und Guy Mancuso such a great photographer where are the results (= pictures) to substantiate this. shouldnt be too difficult.

Guest devonboy Posted July 6, 2007 Share #156 Posted July 6, 2007 I bought my M8 last week after taking advice from this forum. Last night, an ordinary night, I took this photo at a quiz in my local pub. ISO 1250, 90mm Elmarit. What a job focussing! I quite like it. Welcome, dear visitor! Guest guy_mancuso Posted July 6, 2007 Share #157 Posted July 6, 2007 Guy, I'll make a prediction. When you post in the photo forum you are in a sense looking for a critique because that is what normally that forum is for, there is no category for it but just images and subject. i think perfectly fine to comment and make suggestions and that is were i thought this should happen. On a technical forum with the M8 this is a area that is a different place that all things technical go on and the samples there or photos are there to prove a point and make a illustration. the Germany thread as mani points out had it's on limits because as i said right in that thread from the start i just posted becuase i had major internet connection issues and really was just trying to get images up for folks and was saddled with time constraints about getting into the images but yes there is one that clearly had a technical issue that needed to be talked about that was shot with the Nocti and that was reflections of light. Imants is just here to make my life miserable because of some personal feelings he has or is extremely jealous , who the hell knows but if he wants to play tit for tat he can go to hell , have no use for him and he knows it. I have politely asked in public and private to just stay away and also to the mods. He refuses to do that and it is a moderation issue and they won't do anything , so the pissing contest goes on. i really don't give a shit anymore and mani is right behind him on the pissing list. These guys need some help if you ask me, they have no respect in my opinion for any one here and most of the forum feels the same way. Now i won't here the end of this one and frankly who the fuck cares anymore, i'm tired of the bullshit and if they want to ban me than go right ahead. I'm done
Guest devonboy Posted July 6, 2007 Share #158 Posted July 6, 2007 I'm with Mr Mancuso on this one. Not that you know who I am, or even care. I have also had enough of the pratting around in this forum, the endless digs at certain people. I can vote with my eyes and my tyoing fingers. I'm leaving to go somewhere that's fun.
