gwelland Posted July 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It seems like the Leica marketing machine is working overtime to shift the Digilux 3 & R adapters. If you've bought an M8 or other Leica gear this year you can now register for up to 30% discount on Digilux 3 outfits. Here's the link to register as a customer and register your gear: Leica Deals for Registered Customers 30% off of a Digilux 3 still makes it more expensive than the Panasonic L1, although the warranty and support might make it a better deal. Advertisement Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Hi gwelland, Take a look here Do you want a Digilux 3 outfit to go with your M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RMF Posted July 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2007 Thanks for letting us know about this. Seems like a pretty good deal. So a Digilux 3 w/lens sells for about $2500 here in the US so that puts it at $1750 w/ discount.
marknorton Posted July 4, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 4, 2007 There are also the "Nature" promotions which seek to shift a D3 and an R-lens with the sweetener of a free pair of binoculars. Tough to know how well the D3 is doing, not good would be my guess given the price of the L1. With the end of the DMR and future R direction unclear, I expect lens sales have slowed to a trickle, so Leica will be wanting to move that excess inventory on. luigi bertolotti Posted July 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 4, 2007 Appreciable... but Digilux 3 is anyway a costly outfit: for me, as a 2007 M8 buyer, if I were in the mood on spending 1750$ more or so, would probably think of something related to M8... say some lens. Personally, if they want to be brilliant with M8 buyers, would prefer to have discount on some different and less expensive gear, that can be a real COMPLEMENT to M8 : D Lux (tiny : "when you don't like to carry M8 with you...." "always in your pocket...") or V Lux (strong tele : "what you can't afford with M8..." ). ...And I also suspect that Digilux 3 suffers of some problems of sales volume... gwelland Posted July 4, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted July 4, 2007 Actually although I related it to M8 owners here, the actual registration is for any Leica customer, not just M8 customers.
luigi bertolotti Posted July 4, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 4, 2007 Actually although I related it to M8 owners here, the actual registration is for any Leica customer, not just M8 customers. ... and they specify the discount is UP TO 30%... ok, the reality is they are discounting the Digilux 3, but posing the right attention to the dealer channel. that has cameras in stock (the dealer I bought my M8 from told me that to "qualify" for selling M8, he HAD to make stock on a mix of Digiluxes 3 and R9s: that is the norm, albeit in the Italian channel, managed by an importer)... a confirmation that some problem of numbers with this camera do exist.. jaapv Posted July 4, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) A question I have been asking myself for some time. I am into wildlife photography, especially in the African national parks, so I do need long lenses. I have decided, for this year, to go the Visoflex way, but a D3 with a last edition 80-200 would be a very nice set. BUT: I doubt the files from the M8 and the D3 are esthetically compatible in the same series. Rather like using two brands of slide film in the same projection session. Has anybody any experience with this combo? Maybe I should wait for a D4 or Olympus with a 10 MP CCD?? I was walking here; a tele lens is definitely preferable over a WA.... sdai Posted July 4, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 4, 2007 I agree with many other posters that Leica should have built a direct replacement to the original Digilux 2 with a fixed lens. But they had no choice, Panasonic made these cameras ... Leica was hijacked on to the 4/3 sinking boat.
gwelland Posted July 4, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted July 4, 2007 Leica was hijacked on to the 4/3 sinking boat. I'm not necessarily convinced that 4/3rds is a sinking ship yet. I do think the Digilux 3/L1 lacks the appeal of some of the Olympus bodies and are very expensive by comparison. The lens system though does seem to be slowly gaining support but it's definitely taking time.
wattsy Posted July 4, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 4, 2007 Leica might be better advised to simply cut the price of the D3 to all customers - it obviously isn't selling in the numbers that Leica hoped. The "customer loyalty bonus" bollocks is simply irritating.
luigi bertolotti Posted July 4, 2007 Share #11 Posted July 4, 2007 Just to chat... my impression is that 4/3 is not a stupid concept... but the D3 and Panasonic sister have a terrible look to me... following Olympus, Panasonic tried to find a new design trend and Leica agreed to join... but when I saw the new Oly E400 10 MP, I thought at once that hard tiems were to come for the Pana design... so worst for the D3. earleygallery Posted July 4, 2007 Share #12 Posted July 4, 2007 This promotion can only mean the thing isn't selling well enough. I think there are two fundamental problems with the D3. 1) Size - its much bigger than the typical DSLR from Nikon Canon or Pentax yet the sensor is that much smaller??? When you see one next to a Canon and a D2 it just looks enormous. 2) Price - 3 or 4 X the price of the above mentioned DSLR's which also have a much wider and more readily available choice of lenses. OK the D3 comes with a Leica lens but even allowing for upgrading the pack lens on other DSLR's to something more comparable, its still expensive. mr_big Posted July 5, 2007 Share #13 Posted July 5, 2007 I see the weasel words, "Up to 30%." The small print says the price advantage may vary from country to country so who knows what the actual discount will be.
sisoje Posted July 5, 2007 Share #14 Posted July 5, 2007 "Do you want a Digilux 3 outfit to go with your M8?"... No, I want another M8 with my M8! :D
earleygallery Posted July 5, 2007 Share #15 Posted July 5, 2007 Aha! its a ploy by Leica to get M8 users looking at photo's made with other equipment!
