Tats46 Posted January 15, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) First time poster - please be gentle with me Bought a 2nd hand M240 (traded in my 617sIII and love the Leica) and have a few dust bunnies - darker spots and a couple of streaks, easy to remove in LR. Going on vacation, so sent the camera in to a tech for a sensor clean and check up to see if there is any calibration or other issues. Received a call back today saying tech suspects potential sensor corrosion and suggests sending to Germany for sensor change. The bunnies weren't that bad to me, none had the white spots, nor the dark ring that I could see. I thought there may be a bit of dust/oil marks is all. Anyone heard of the M240 sensor having a corrosion issue? They're a respected tech and I haven't got the camera back just yet to check it out, should have it this week. I've said to them I'll take the camera back for now as the vacation is close and make a call after I'm back. Any thoughts?
Advertisement Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Hi Tats46, Take a look here M240 Corrosion on a sensor clean. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 15, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 15, 2018 Sounds like a bit of nonsense to me. The M240 does not exhibit sensor corrosion. That is the M9. It seems to me that he is jumping on the bandwagon without checking the facts Leica is the only place where the sensor can be calibrated. Normal techs simply do not have the laser-interferometer gear to do so. I would check with Leica for this story.
Tats46 Posted January 16, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted January 16, 2018 Thank you Jaap. Spoke to them today and collected my camera - must admit they have done a marvellous job on the cleaning. Sensor dust check picks up zero dots and it was measles before - they also cleaned up the surfaces of the lenses (Zeiss 50 and v-lander 21) really well too. I'm slowly understanding what focal lengths I want (the 50 zeiss f2 is a definite keeper) and I have a sub $100 13.5 Hector on the way. Back to the sensor, the tech says he is seeing some indication of commencement of sensor corrosion, but its very very slight/early - says if camera is within 5 years of age can send it off for change under warranty. I will think this over for a bit and may contact Leica myself, but tech does seem to know what he's talking about and has a good reputation. I purchased the camera from a US store and I'm in Australia so don't think the warranty option would be available to me anyway - don't think so....in which case if something does develop, the trade in/up option may emerge (shhh...don't tell the missus). Thank you again for the reply, it's very much appreciated. Having seen the camera sensor since its been cleaned my concern has significantly reduced. Hope he is correct (on the warranty), as I have never seen anything to say Leica is doing so.

Sorry, the five years are for the M9 (and Monochrom1) only, not for the M240, as the M9 is the only type that has sensor corrosion. There can be a lot wrong with an M240 sensor, but not this. Tats46 Posted January 17, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted January 17, 2018 Thanks Jaap, Very informative.....next time I need something checked out I'll use another tech. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.
jaapv Posted January 17, 2018 Share #7 Posted January 17, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Or just ask Leica - they are very approachable.
digger1914 Posted January 17, 2018 Share #8 Posted January 17, 2018 Also, if you have corrosion you will know it! My M9 went down that road and it was impossible to miss.
colonel Posted January 19, 2018 Share #9 Posted January 19, 2018 I agree Sounds like the technician doesn’t know what he is talking about Confused between M9 and M Anyway the sensor of the M9 doesn’t corrode, its the glass layer on top of it
250swb Posted January 19, 2018 Share #10 Posted January 19, 2018 Tech people only know what they know, they don't know everything. If he hasn't cleaned the sensor for oil and regular dust, which requires two types of cleaning fluid, then he could well still be seeing oil/grease stains. It should be a lesson that you need to take control of the situation and clean your own sensor.

What lenses do you use on the Leica 240 I couldn't find that.
