daveleo Posted August 5, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi there i think i have this correct, but would appreciate some verification or correction. the D2 has an HDTV aspect ratio format option. my question regards the resolution of a JPG image. the resolution is established by the compression level set by the user, it is NOT effected by the selection of the HDTV aspect ratio. that is.... the "high definition" term doesnt mean better resolution. correct? the HDTV format is a simple masking action..... the image perspective is not effected by this selection (at least i cant see it having an effect). the image is panoramic only in the sense that it is wider than it is tall .... it is not extreme wide angle..... or are my eyes gone bad? correct? the D2 is my main camera on an upcoming trip, but i am bringing 2 film cameras as backup because i understand them a lot better than i understand digital.... so if you can clear this up, it would be appreciated. regards daveleo
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Hi daveleo, Take a look here HDTV format on digilux-2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted August 6, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 6, 2006 Do you mean the Digilux 2 od the DLux 2? I think you mean the latter. AFAIK, the HDTV mode simply refers to an aspect ratio so that you can display it on a screen, it has nothing to do with higher resolution as such. The image is cropped from the full frame image. cbretteville Posted August 6, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 6, 2006 Davelo, It is just a reduced resolution they decided to offer, 1920x1080 rather than the full 2560x1920. It gives you a 16x9 format. Better to learn where the 16x9 format fits within the full frame and crop after you get back. You'll have more info to play with. So to answer your question, yes it is a masking question, but is is also a lower res. shot. 'HD' is very miss leading in this respect.
daveleo Posted August 6, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted August 6, 2006 thank you i do mean the digilux-2 (not the dlux-2). i was trippng over the "HDTV" terminology .... this is merely an aspect ratio change, not an improvement in image detail (which i was calling "resolution"). i understand now that it is simply a masking feature. thanks daveleo
etanguero Posted August 6, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 6, 2006 i understand now that it is simply a masking feature. that's it. better allways shoot full sensor and later cut by means of software. eT
