Good luck with that. I've NEVER had a response from them!

Pre-ordered adapters shipped with V1.0 so you could return it and get another one which will have V1.1 installed already. That won't help you with future firmware upgrades, though.

Really important topic, thanks for the valuable input to all contributors.

Since I want to use my " S crown jewels", the S 24 and especially the S Apo 120 Macro on a modern camera (IBIS, flexible focus point selection) I preordered the adapter early January '25.

I got it last Saturday and tried this morning to update to firmware V1.1 - and failed on a Mac M1 Ultra (mac OS Sonoma 14.6.1) as well as on a M4 Max Laptop (mac OS Sequoia 15.1.1). No "Kipon" disk to be seen. Proven USB-C cables, including the Thunderbolt 5 cable from Apple. Disk Utility or SoftRAID couldn't find the adapter too.... Unfortunately I do not have access to a Windows machine anymore!

Any ideas ?

I will order a GFX II-variant only after successful update (in order to minimise financial risks), so I can't try the adapter on an GFX...

Same problem for me, the Kipon-disc doesn't show up on the two Macs I have, and I have tried many different cables. On search for a pc...

Tested update of FW on a PC at work. The Kipon adapter disk appeared (good!), but nothing happened when I copied the new FW-file into the Kipon-disk... Searching for another PC, as well as testing with all of the US cabels around...

When I updated my FW it happened so quickly that I didn’t take much notice. All I remember seeing is the file name V1.0 changing to V1.1.

I have a second adapter which I haven’t yet updated so I’ll update that one and take notes/screenshots.

+1.

This is what I see (on the PC that gets contact with the adapter): On the Kipon-disk (which is the Kipon adapter), the FW1.0-file is seen. When I copy the FW1.1-file over to the Kipon-disk, nothing happens (as far as I can tell), and both files are seen on the Kipon-disk. If the update is successful, as far as I understand, the FW1.0-file should disappear and the FW1.1-file should be seen. I will try to get hold on a second PC (and testing with various cables), for a cross-check. I have tested with three Macs, but the Kipon-disk doesn't show up on any of these, so a no-go there...

Correct.

I’ll connect my already updated adapter and hopefully I’ll see FW1.1 still there!

Question for who has the adapter. If 35mm is not compatible, what does that means? No AF, no exif, no aperture control at all?

I will run a test with my lenses (on GFX100S) in the weekend. Based on a few user reports on Kipon's FB page, it looks like for half of the early adopters, the S35 works properly. With FW1.1, the adapter is not at the fully consistent working level that we would like to see. For me, aperture control and transfer of correct focal length are what I want/need.

Good to hear. Do you have any idea what it was that made it work with that particular PC?
Or was it just magic?😀

No idea... Seems like the adapter chip isn't the most robust. A little sad Macs are out (as of now), but this may change with forthcoming updates.

And then FW version 1.2 is out, presumably with improved stability across the lenses:

Hopefully I'll get a chance to test it today and report back.

I managed to fire off a test shoot... then my GFX100S froze up!

The sharpness is definitely there so it's just a shame that the electronic side of things isn't yet up to scratch. I wonder if my camera settings need to be adjusted, or my camera firmware updated??

Also, it would have been helpful if Kipon told us what to expect/what had been improved with VER_1_2.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not many downloads - and fewer for V1.2 which suggests that people are unaware of its existence.

I have two of the adapters but I'm reluctant to sell one of them until they work perfectly. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't want to be accused of selling someone a 'dud' (although I would update it to V1.2 before shipping it!)

I have recently tested GFX110S (FW1.2) with S35, S70, S120 and S180, exclusively with manual focus. Everything has been working. The GFX view finder is not the best (nor is the back screen), and the body feels quite plastic. The menu system is not to my liking either, but I can live with that. Aperture control, electronic shutter, IBIS and focus magnification are the features I use.

Where to put photos taken with GFX & S-lenses: On the standard 'Leica S image' thread, or should we start a separate 'Adapted Leica S lens image' thread? Given the rather low number of (active) S-forum users, I would think the existing thread should be ok. Any views?

I haven't had much time recently but I have been thinking of trying different settings on my GFX100S to see if the adapter liked those better. The GFX100II has a higher resolution electronic viewfinder than the GFX100S so that would be better for focus peaking. I can't afford one of those beauties, however, so my current set-up will have to do!
