Hey Guys

I'm no pro when it comes to optimizing pixels to 500 kb, which is required to post a picture in this forum. But I have been kept away from posting pictures in this forum because 500kb is below the limit where things look good. In these days I think we should get beyond floppy disc size restrictions - in other words: is it possible to extend bite requirements a bite?

So what is the problem? This image is at 1000 KB approx., the following post  at 230 KB approx. Never mind the (lack of) artistic merit.

There is a definite difference between those two images, the larger one has much smoother transitions between light and dark and just looks less harsh, however, I find that an image of around 460kb is very hard to distinguish from one of 1000kb. I am a premium member but very few of the images I post are above 500kb, the extra size simply doesn't have a significant advantage.

Right. I expressly made it just over 200. I could have made it smoother, but that would have lost some structure ;)

As it is I agree that 500 KB is usually enough, except for Monochrom1 images. An increase in pixel number to about 1750  @ 1000 KB would be more useful for modern large hi-res monitors.

Just for sake of the argument, @ 150 kB.

And at 78  kB on the disk...Now it is really starting to break up, but this is the smallest size possible in PS (the forum interpolates it to larger)

And, to get back to the OP, just under 500 kB, compression 10 (one of  the three "maximum" rates)

Some years ago I was gobsmacked when being told at the counter: "Sorry Sir, we are a moneyless bank now"  My first thought was: Not much use having them handle my money matters in that case...

To return to the original question, one method is to upload the photo to Flickr and then use the sharing options there to post a link to the photo in your message on this site. The photo will then appear here and not be subject to the size restrictions.
