EoinC Posted April 18, 2018 Share #581 Posted April 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wonder if this lens appeals to those with good eyesight more than say, the short sighted. Since about five years old I have had to struggle (too strong a word) against blur and I don’t see the attraction of pictures which look like I’ve taken my glasses off and not got close enough. I can see it’s not the same kind of indistinctness but it provokes the same frustration in me. Interesting perspective, Exodies. I just realized that I, too, have Thambar eyes. My World has gone a bit soft-focus in the last decade. I do, however, like many of the Thambar shots I am seeing, as I like not wearing my glasses. To those who own the Thambar, please keep posting images. It helps me to think about how the World can be seen.

LocalHero1953 Posted April 18, 2018 Share #582 Posted April 18, 2018 James Thurber was extremely short sighted and wrote an essay ('The Admiral on the Wheel') about the wonderful world he inhabited when he broke his glasses.
ianman Posted April 18, 2018 Share #583 Posted April 18, 2018 I was buggering about in the garden today, trying to understand... I'm finding my preferred aperture setting is around f2.8 red scale, strangely, mine doesn't have any markings between f/2.3 and F/3.2. You want glow? We got glow... Welcome, dear visitor! wattsy Posted April 18, 2018 Share #584 Posted April 18, 2018 I'm still using mine around F8-F11 for landscape type stuff. I've never used a 90 very much in the past (other than my 90 Macro-Elmar for "macro") so the Thambar is as much a learning curve for me as a 90mm lens as it is for one that has an unorthodox look. However, here is one at around F5.6 that shows how uneven the field of focus is. No spot filter.
wattsy Posted April 18, 2018 Share #585 Posted April 18, 2018 This one is also at F5.6 (I think) and focussed a bit closer so the Thambar effects are correspondingly reduced. However, you can see in the Dog's Mercury outside the focus plane a bit of glow.
wattsy Posted April 18, 2018 Share #586 Posted April 18, 2018 (edited) At F11 and mounted on the Macro-Adaptor-M, the Thambar cleans up nicely and looks like any decent 90mm lens. Edited April 18, 2018 by wattsy
wattsy Posted April 18, 2018 Share #587 Posted April 18, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) And another at F11-ish but further away and with corresponding unevenness. I quite like the relative lack of contrast from this lens. Edited April 18, 2018 by wattsy

wattsy Posted April 19, 2018 Share #589 Posted April 19, 2018 Thanks Dunk. Here's one taken at, I think, around F5.6 which has a little of the Thambar twinkle in the highlights.

I took some last weekend stopped down and without the filter and - obviously - got the same type of effect. I must say, that at the moment, I'm not too keen on it, it reminds me of the lens-baby. And I understand why this would make some of our viewers feel a bit queasy! Although it works much better in your photo! Welcome, dear visitor! wattsy Posted April 19, 2018 Share #592 Posted April 19, 2018 Perhaps both. Nonetheless I find it quite compelling. Dreamy or queasy? M9, LTM Thambar L1001151_ird_lcf_013.jpg
wattsy Posted April 19, 2018 Share #593 Posted April 19, 2018 (edited) I'm not too keen on it, it reminds me of the lens-baby. Wash your mouth out! It's bad enough that Paul refers to Jack Vettriano in a recent post. I'm very happy for Peter H to express his scepticism (chime his bell of negativity or whatever it is that he has been accused of) in this thread but there are certain references that should be remain banned. ianman Posted April 19, 2018 Share #594 Posted April 19, 2018 I missed that reference, I quite like his paintings! I do agree though, maybe mentioning the l***-b*** was a bit out of order and shall refrain from doing so again (even if it does look a bit like a lens-baby...)

wattsy Posted April 20, 2018 Share #600 Posted April 20, 2018 I particularly like the last one Albert (the 21mm photograph) – a subject framed by a grand piano is always a classic pose. Still firmly in the experimental stage, I've been looking at bokeh and other out of focus effects and I generally like what I'm seeing in the F4-F5.6 range.
