I am thinking of purchasing a Thambar for its unique qualities (as illustrated so beautifully in this discussion/photo thread). But I am curious about its other characteristics. Specifically, how sharp is it when stopped-down? How well does it serve as a general 90mm travel lens? Thanks very much.

I don't think it would be great as a travel lens. It's pretty heavy and manipulating it is a bit cumbersome. If you like 90mm, I'd consider the 90 macro with extender. for travel. The only drawback there is it doesn't open up very far. But the macro is a great tool to have on hand, IMO, for something like travel. The 85mm Summarex is a great lens, can give you soft focus, nice bokeh, or quite clear images. It is big and heavy, however. But it is a favorite of mine. On the other hand, if you used a Thambar for travel, your photos wouldn't look like everyone else's. That would be nice.

Thanks very much for the travel advice. I'm used to lugging around the three SL Varios, as well as my 75mm Noctilux, so a 500g Thambar may seem light by comparison! I'll let you know if I purchase it, take it with me to Rome, and capture some unique travel photos.

I was thinking about buying the Thambar this year..

Got the Lensbaby Velvet instead.

So glad I did..

$400- or so..

And comes in 28mm/50mm/85mm..

Thambar is nice..

But if you need a SF lens..

I would seriously consider the Velvet series instead.

Built very well & solid.

Images are stellar!

Really....a no brainer for this type of lens.

I got the 28mm..soft focus at wider apertures..is also is a macro lens..and sharp stopped down.

Ticked too many boxes for me to ignore..
