pico Posted March 25, 2018 Share #461 Posted March 25, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone considered modifying, for example, a 135 Hektor to soft-focus? Or would that be some kind of sin?
Advertisement Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Hi pico, Take a look here Thambar-Crazy. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted March 25, 2018 Share #462 Posted March 25, 2018 Definite sin.
pico Posted March 25, 2018 Share #463 Posted March 25, 2018 Definite sin. Undercutting Leica a sin?
LocalHero1953 Posted March 26, 2018 Share #464 Posted March 26, 2018 Not a sin - please do what you like with a Hektor, and start a separate thread about it.
wattsy Posted March 26, 2018 Share #465 Posted March 26, 2018 Undercutting Leica a sin? I was just being flippant. In truth, there's probably something in what you say. It might be quite interesting (and certainly much cheaper) to play around modifying some of the older, lesser loved, Leica lenses with some wire wool and/or spot filters and the like. Possibly even deliberately decentering the lens.
albertknappmd Posted March 26, 2018 Share #466 Posted March 26, 2018 I respectfully point out that if you're going to adopt that terminology then to be correct it should be (SF)2 Ouch... Quite correct... (SF)2 it should be.. Albert
Peter H Posted March 26, 2018 Share #467 Posted March 26, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ouch... Quite correct... (SF)2 it should be.. Albert Is it, when the two SFs are different?

albertknappmd Posted March 26, 2018 Share #469 Posted March 26, 2018 Is it, when the two SFs are different? While the content is different, an S is still an S and an F is still an F (pardons to Gertrude Stein of course) so (SF)2 is still fine. schattenundlicht Posted March 26, 2018 Share #470 Posted March 26, 2018 One could argue though, that on mathematical grounds it could simply be SFx2, although (SF)^2 [rolleyes: iPad] looks more intriguing

wattsy Posted March 27, 2018 Share #472 Posted March 27, 2018 Leica refer to it as the Centre Spot Filter in the manual. I’m not sure what is wrong with doing the same (or, if you insist on abbreviating it, using CSF).
LocalHero1953 Posted March 27, 2018 Share #473 Posted March 27, 2018 Since my main aim is communication and understanding, not mathematical precision and logic, I shall continue to call it spot filter - two words, no capitals - because everyone will understand what I'm writing. Of course, if I was German, nothing other than a 91 character compound noun would be acceptable!
wattsy Posted March 27, 2018 Share #474 Posted March 27, 2018 if I was German, nothing other than a 91 character compound noun would be acceptable! Zentralblende, according to the manual (which is quite restrained and rather nice IMO).
Simon Posted March 27, 2018 Share #475 Posted March 27, 2018 (edited) I probably will not open my wallet, though I have considered it*. Same with the Noctilux - just as much a one trick pony, IMO, though that phrase implies a rather narrow view of both of them. * I considered it several years ago, as I do have a need for a forgiving portrait lens for older faces. In the end though, a Hektor 7.3cm was cheaper and satisfies that need for the moment. The Noctilux is definitely a fantastic portait lens and by no means a one trick pony! Here’s a Noctilux (f/0.95 on M10) portrait of yours truly showing focal sharpness and nice decaying softness. This was possibly stopped down to f/1.4 as DOF is too wide for f/0.95 I think, so you can achieve a softer look if you prefer. Also, focus is missed slightly. Sorry, hardly model material but take it or leave it! Anyway, the Thambar and Noctilux are two totally different beasts but Noctilux is far more versatile in my opinion. I think it’s great Leica can make a new very-old lens like this, it’s just a bit too much for me. Welcome, dear visitor! paulsydaus Posted March 29, 2018 Share #476 Posted March 29, 2018 Wow I’m impressed by how patient your daughter is. I hope she inherits your camera one day! Another test snap to illustrate my point about the lack of glow when focussed in the close range, especially when the main subject plane (in this case the eyes and face) is in the plane of focus. This is at F2.8. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Milan_S Posted March 29, 2018 Share #477 Posted March 29, 2018 Thank you all for your lovely words on my photos taken with the Thambar. My photos and article will be published in the next Viewfinder of LHSA. Furthermore I am happy to announce that I will continue with the Old Hollywood series taken with the Thambar lens. albertknappmd Posted March 31, 2018 Share #479 Posted March 31, 2018 I used the Thambar at f/2.4-2.6 w/o (SF)2 on the following 3 images.. I noticed that they really sharpen by f/4...
