andit Posted July 1, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Sorry, I know that this is just a bit off topic, but this does effect a great deal of M8 users. I've just been to Apple's website to download 10.4.10 (new month so I can start downloading again as I reached my cap in June) and I just get the feeling that the Mac is moving ever further to the back seat. Looking at the website, you would say Apple make phones and music players. Is the Mac going to die in the near furture, being a casulty of the iPhone and the iPod? I certainly hope not (especially since I'm just about to purchase another two iMac's). I have no aspirations to move back to Windows. Just wondering if any other Mac users out there feel the same way. Andreas

timd. Posted July 1, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 1, 2007 one answer: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/04/25results.html "Apple shipped 1,517,000 Macintosh® computers and 10,549,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 36 percent growth in Macs and 24 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter." more questions? jonoslack Posted July 1, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 1, 2007 HI Andreas I don't think so. Remember, the iphone only came out a couple of days ago, and it's the culmination of a lot of work from Apple's point of view - it's tough to expect them to pretend it's not happening! On the contrary, I think that without the ipod, Apple would almost certainly have disappeared. As for Leopard - it's coming in the Autumn, that'll be soon enough for me I think! anfrve Posted July 1, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 1, 2007 seem real, they forget their first score, (ex look at apple displays, and imacs) now they're not Apple Computer Inc. but Apple Inc. do the need fresh money on cash ? cheers andrea

carstenw Posted July 1, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 1, 2007 The Mac's growth rate is at the moment much higher than PCs in general or Windows. If the Mac doesn't have a future, then certainly not because of anything happening right now. Apple is *very* profitable at the moment.
andit Posted July 1, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted July 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks all, That does certainly make me feel somewhat better. As stated above, Mac are unsurpassed and I would be devastated if I had to work on Windows again. As for OSX Leopard, I'm looking forward to it... Now that the M8 compatiblity issue has been resolved, Aperture is great! Andreas
innerimager Posted July 1, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 1, 2007 the amazing popularity of the iPod and perhaps iPhone is driving Mac sales, not inhibiting them. people are being introduced to Apple's strengths, superb design, user friendliness, and are tempted to try the Macs, and are not dissapointed. andybarton Posted July 1, 2007 Share #9 Posted July 1, 2007 On the contrary, I think that without the ipod, Apple would almost certainly have disappeared. It wasn't the iPod that "saved" Apple. It was the Steve Jobs hiring Jonathan Ives and the creation of original iMac. Even in their darkest days, 10/11 years ago, they were still a hugely rich company, with a user-base to die for. Now, they have the world in their hands, with a user-base to die for.
fjmcsu Posted July 1, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 1, 2007 Hopefully the iPhone is another revenue stream that can help drive the innovative computer side.Let's see what Leopard brings us!
RMF Posted July 1, 2007 Share #11 Posted July 1, 2007 Perhaps the Mac sales are brisk but they only hold 5% market share in the PC market. All that being said I own and use two macs (Powerbook and a G5) and 4 ipods at home...and I work for that rather large company in Redmond who makes operating systems, software, and various entertainment products (we also make Mac software). BTW- I bought an ipod before I owned a mac.

It is true Mac has by comparison low percentage of market share but it is a market share by one company and the rest of 95% market was shared by hundreds (if not more) companies. It is hard to point out another company or system has such little share and such big compact in industries. I think Mac is slowly picking up their market in a good way. bab Posted July 1, 2007 Share #14 Posted July 1, 2007 Andreas, Now that you know the answer you should hold off buying the imacs and go back to the pc you will have the choice of 30,000 different companies to buy the pc from and you can run windows:)
andybarton Posted July 1, 2007 Share #15 Posted July 1, 2007 And BTW - what is the market share of Porsche, not to speak of Leica? Best Holger Yes, but Porsches use the same "OS" as Fords. 98 RON unleaded... Leicas use the same "OS" as Nikons and Canons and... Tri-X or SD cards. The Mac market is a classic example of a niche punching well above its weight.
guidomo Posted July 2, 2007 Share #16 Posted July 2, 2007 Anyone who has seen the recent interview with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates at D5 will be convinced that Steve has far too long a history in computers to just drop the Mac. An interview worth watching IMHO: http://d5.allthingsd.com/20070530/video-steve-jobs-and-bill-gates-prologue/ (transcript here: http://d5.allthingsd.com/20070530/d5-gates-jobs-interview/ )
johnjs Posted July 2, 2007 Share #17 Posted July 2, 2007 Hi all, Is the Mac going to die in the near furture, being a casulty of the iPhone and the iPod? Andreas No. New iMac announcement is expected by the end of the month, the new OS ships in October. They probably have an update for the MacBook for the coming school year also. Apple is simply expanding their business into all of the "convergence" areas of information, entertainment, and communication, with computing being at the core of it all. best-John
wlaidlaw Posted July 2, 2007 Share #18 Posted July 2, 2007 As a Mac user for a few years now, one of the things that concerns me is the deterioration in the quality of their help lines. A few years ago, they were unsurpassed - pleasant, helpful and extremely knowledgeable people. The level of helpfulness has declined a bit but the level of technical ability has plummeted. I can only see this declining dramatically as the help desk will now have to deal with thousands of "my iPhone won't play my Britney Video" type of enquiries. I and thousands of other people who bought 20" Duo-Core2 iMacs at the end of last year (mine was the 4th replacement for the disastrous early Intel iMac), were consistently misled and fobbed off over a three month period, when neither Airport nor networking would work properly. We we told it was us, our routers, thick walls, anything but the truth, which was that there was a firmware problem with the 802.11N airport card, luckily now corrected with a firmware update - but why lie to us for 3 months. Leica were much more honest and admitted there was a problem, which they were working on as fast as they could. In the unlikely event that the iPhone and iPod kill Apple by becoming unfashionable, I would guess someone else would take up OSX. I believe there is one other manufacturer who makes an OSX computer - does anyone know who? Wilson

I believe there is one other manufacturer who makes an OSX computer - does anyone know who? Wilson OS X is a closed and proprietary operating system, as such Apple owns all rights to it and so far hasn't licensed its use to any other computer maker / assembler. Steve Jobs has been extremely adamant that Apple will never go down that path again. The only good solution in his eyes are hardware and software designed together. As a long time apple user and developer I can't argue with that.
Guest Bernd Banken Posted July 2, 2007 Share #20 Posted July 2, 2007 After selling the second Trojan horse to the crowd beside the Ipod, people are forced to use Itune for the Iphone operation. The Windows user now will see in short time how smooth and elegant Safari, Mail, etc. will work, hopefully:rolleyes: The new Iphone will create the next very big wave of switchers I guess. But parking Macs in the second or third row Steve will never do... Bernd
