M10 and Leica Q: which lens...?!

Hello everybody,

want to share my experience and need your precious suggestions...

I have bought almost one year ago a M10 camera with a 28mm f2. I'm really satisfied about my decision and really enjoying the experience taking pictures with the rangefinder system.

After shooting more than 10 years with Canon decided few weeks ago to sell all of my Canon equipments due to the "non using"...thanks to the small size of the M, I have always with me and was not using anymore the DSLR System.

I would like to buy another Leica body and few days ago the Leica shop, where I usually go, suggest me to try the Leica Q...I was really enthusiastic for the dimension, for the full frame quality and for the fastness to take picture. Add to that you should know I really like the 28mm lens for all of the different possibilities give me to "create" the picture.

Now my problem is: if I would buy the Leica Q with the 28mm fixed lens I should sell my 28mm f2 for the Leica M and purchase another one. I think it's not so clever to have two bodies with the same lens...

Which lens, according to your experience should I buy?

From one hand I would like to buy the 50mm f1,4 from another I like to take the 35mm f1,4. My ideal situation will be to travel just with two bodies (M and Q) and only two lens...of course the 28mm with the Q and one for the M.

Could you please help me to take my decision sharing your personal experience?

Thanks in advance for the time you will give me!

Best regards

Gino

Lately I came back from a trip to India. I took my M10 and the 50mm APO Summicron with me (have a look at my thread "Rajasthan, Indien"), and in order not to have to change lenses I also decided to take my Leica Q with me. This was quite a perfect combination - the Q with it`s autofocus for situations, where I hadn`t  enough time to compose a picture and of course for the wide angle part and the M10 for all the rest. If you have a similar intention, 35mm on the M10 makes no sense. You better go for a 50mm - it`s your choice, they`re all good !

I did a recent trip with the Q and an M with a 50 and 35 lux’s. My 28 ‘cron stayed home. Most days I took only the Q and M with 50 lux. One day I took only the M and 35.

If you love your 28 ‘cron, I’d suggest you keep it if you can afford to. An M with a 50 & 28 is a great pair.

Seems like you should hold off on a 35. For now :-)

Obviously you should buy the Q (where the lens is superb) and take same shots with Q and 28 lens on your M. Then decide if the M Summicron lens is superfluous or not. (FWIW that's exactly what I did and I have no regrets).

and?..... you sold the Cron? Keep both?

Thanks for views - I am also considering kit to travel with (S Africa in Jan)

For what I have available I'm thinking M10 with my 35 Cron ASPH and CV 50 f/1.5.  Second body would be A7R II with 25 Zeiss Batis and a borrowed 70-210 Canon zoom.  I half expect to leave the Sony in the suitcase after the initial three day safari section of the trip.  M10 plus two lenses is a nice easy carry

Actually I have the Q and the M10 with a 50mm summilux. I made my last trip's photos with these two, judge by yourself:

I must say a friend had a 21mm and a 90mm, I gave them a try but almost no pics taken. And I am convinced the Q and the M10+50mm can do the most part of it.

I kept my D800 nikon with a prime for birdwatch and another for very hi-tech macros I am sometimes asked for in the botanical field.

Hope this might help

I have both and I've traveled a few times with both, but I've never really used them together.  They have different purposes.

I'd suggest keeping the 28 cron and purchasing a 50 lux.  It doesn't get much better than that.

Purposes and circumstances for using the Q or the M10+50lux are different.

I always carry both everywhere I go, just in case...

And I must say I hate changing lenses, dust and other bad issues on sensor... I had to have it cleaned after my Faroe trip because of that, someone opened the car's door when I was doing it... on a windy wet rainy nasty day...

I use my Q and M10 (and M240 before) very often as a combo with the 50Apo. If I add one extra lens it is the 90AA. And in addition I would stay with your 28 if possible - sometimes one camera with 28/50 is a nice light package.
