I did it! Now for some questions.....

Well, I have finally bitten the bullet and will be a proud M8 owner next week. Even confessed to my wife!

I do have a question though - on my Digilux 2 (currently in the New Jersey extended care facility) I use a Screenpatronus protective plastic sheet over the screen. I have come across a Giotto Aegis protective glass and am wondering if any of you M8 users have one installed and what your thoughts might be.

While the many plastic protectors will protect the screen from abrasions, the occasional bump to the screen would be fatal. The Giotto Aegis is made from a 0.5mm sheet of multi-coated Schott glass.Looking at the sorry state of the film back door of my M6 workhorse got me thinking…..

Now - what else do I need……. Extra batteries, filters, John Milich’s hood for the 15mm Heliar, coding a 21mm ASPH and 35mm 'cron; the list just keeps on growing and the $$$ from my Leica play account are disappearing fast. Fortunately I have about six LTM to M adapters expertly milled by John to accept the plethora of LTM lenses I intend to play with!

Thanks,

Jan

I use the Screen Petronus but they are strictly a consumable item. A couple of months - maximum - and they start peeling from the edges. They do protect the screen though. I'd be interested in a replaceable glass cover. If you do damage the LCD cover, I don't think it's the work of a moment to replace.

However much money you have it is not enough....... I would also be interested in hearing if anyone has installed the Giotto Aegis. they are not expensive. I have tried the screen Patronous and they will eventually peel off especially is you travel and put the camera in and out of a camera bag.

Jan, you said you confessed it to your wife... with ALL the details ? I am lucky enough I hadn't this problem...she's not at all for cameras... when she realized I did pictures and then looked at the LCD she simply said "ah, it's a digital ? it's like the other..." (M4).

Bill,

Popflash sells the AEGIS Screen Protector. I called to ask about it, but Tony was out. When he calls me back (probably Monday), I'll post what he has to say. As I'm down to my last Screen Patronus, I'll probably buy the AEGIS and give it a try.

The screen cover on my Digilux 2 is close to 2 years old and still intact but, come to think of it, was not a screenpatronus product. It was one of those spur of the moments eBay buys and it stuck (pun intended). My wife's D-Lux 2 and a recently acquired FMC-FZ30 have Screenpatronus protectors, they seem to be the same as what has been in the Digilux 2 for a couple of years.

Well.... The first question was "how much was it" and I replied "about $4,500, but I saved close to $300 by beating the July price increase".....

And no, it was not $4,500, it just sounded like a nice round number at the time......

Nice to always round off to a lower number than it actually was. certainly a old trick that i have been using for many years. LOL Highly recommended technique.:D

Welcome aboard Jan

Protective multi-purpose foil is sold in sheets in many hobbyist and do-it-yourself stores. Cut a piece of the right size, bevel off the corners a little and apply. There is no point in purchasing expensive 'bespoke' foil. If you can't cut it cleanly, then you can't apply it either.

The Screen Patronus covers are great, but they are slightly too large, so the edges catch on things. My first one fell off after two weeks. On the second one, I trimmed the edge slightly, and it is still holding strong after months.

Very true. The trick is in how it is applied and whether the sheet fits correctly or not. I have cut down a spare foil from an Epson P-2000 (5 inch/125mm screen) to fit a few cameras. Always cut slightly smaller and round of the edges.

Now if only we could find a user of the Giotto Aegis protector......

Best,

Got the screen patronus thing and it peeled off. I don't bother any more - it's as tough as the screens on my Canon DSLRs - a lot of use and no problems... Handled with reasonable care I don't think you'll have any major issues...

  • 1 month later...

Do not know how... but obviously recklessness by U No Who...

a small crack appeared at one corner of the protective glass...

It does not affect the data screen...

Leica Olms says send the cam back to be replaced... = a month of Sundays...

So looking to Giotto Aegis as a quasi condom...

as best to be safe than sorry...

Best wishes

Jan,

Welcome to the ward! Yes, always wear a screen protector on your M8 but that's only a minor cost item.

Brace yourself: figure that you're going to spend an extra US$3K or so in the 12 months following the pruchase of your M8. You'll need more disk, maybe an updated computer, a better printer, more software, a class or two on color management and digital printing, etc., etc. And then there are all the UV/IR filters you'll need to buy beyond the two that Leica tosses in with the body. Plus sending your older Leica lenses to Leica Service for 6-bit encoding (my last one goes in the mail in a few days.)

Your marriage had better be strong because buying the M8 body is JUST THE FIRST STEP my friend.

I've ordered a couple of the Giottos protectors from Tony for my M8s and they should arrive next week sometime. Up until now, although not on the M8s as I just got them last weekend, I've been using the Invisible Shield protectors on all my LCDs and they are excellent. The idea of the Giottos seemed a better way to go with the Leicas, however.

Cheers,

Simon
