Help for better selection

My only beef about the SL/24-90 is using the lens in manual focus mode. I find the electronic coupling between the focus ring and the focus mechanism rather vague and somewhat laggy/slow. However the joystick together with spot mode auto-focus works so well, that you rarely need to use MF on the 24-90. The excellent VF with focus peaking makes focusing manual lenses a joy. I find I can focus my Noctilux f0.95 or Summarex 85mm/f1,5 better in low light on my SL than on my M cameras using the rangefinder. Obviously at some point the SL will be upgraded, probably with a somewhat higher MP count sensor (34 to 40MP). However, if you want this, my guess is you would have to wait until late next year, with an announcement possibly at Photokina September 2018 and availability some months later.

That is of course, unless Leica gets distracted by making legacy versions of the 5cm f4,5 Anastigmat and the 73mm/f1.9 Hektor   :)

I would have thought an update to the SL is inevitable but the timing is less certain. I would guess the S and M240 lines are first in the queue for update before the SL. Leica only has limited resources and cannot bring out multiple updates in a year like Nikon, Sony and Canon are able to. Some have claimed that SL and SL lens sales have been disappointing but I suspect this is only blind guesswork and not from any evidence.

I really like using the APO Macro-Elmarit-R on my SL; reasonable used price also and one of the best macro lenses made. Manual focusing is easy (and usually necessary with macro anyways). Here are a couple from Old Car City (White, GA):

I can't see why a significant update to the M10 would come soon, but specialized variants like the M-D or a monochrome would make sense and should be less costly to bring to market.  Although some will object, leaving video function to the SL will help to keep things simple.  I think an SL upgrade is likely sooner rather than after a third update on the S series.  Still cameras of outstanding quality for occasional serious video seems to be a profitable niche, but serious video, as now defined by the Panasonic GH-5, requires more than the SL offers, in both codec software and internal bandwidth.  Both could be delivered in an upgrade with no or little external body changes.  As the SL is now a platform for T, R and S lenses (and selling more T and S lenses would make some money for Leica in the near term), making the firmware for each work optimally with the SL is also important, as is cleaning up the handling of upgrades.  Today you can't tell what firmware level a T or S lens has when it is used on an SL, and if it doesn't work as it should, you can't do anything about it without going to your neighborhood Leica Store to get upgraded firmware installed.  This is just dumb, as my country has no Leica stores, and many of us live where there are none close by.

edit:  and of course we could hope for IBIS in the next SL, but that will take longer.  And an emphasis on video might bring two UHS-II slots, not just slot #1.

Hello Wilson:

yes; the following was taken with the 21Summilux on the SL (on another trip) that shows the whole vehicle (under cover with a few other "special" cars). NOt a very good shot, but does show the whole thing:

M240 is a different product line from the M10.

Which you think Leica will continue? That is an interesting idea. It’s one thing to keep producing the camera, and quite another to keep updating it. Not a silly idea at all.

John,

I think there are a lot of people who want the extra facilities of the M240 against the M10 and are prepared to put up with the minor extra bulk to have that. Hopefully with ever improving electronics, Leica might manage to pack any M240 successor into the M10 size package. I suspect heat dispersal for 4K video processing or a larger sensor might be the limiting factor.

Yes, I’m sure that’s true.

When the M10 was released, it seemed Leica was drawing a line under the M240, hoping those wanting that extra functionality would migrate to the SL (probably still the best option). Keeping the M240 going was having a bob each way.

I wonder what their conclusion will be?

Personally, the SL is all the camera I need. No need for more pixels, OIS in the two zooms is enough, does everything I want. I underutilize its features already. More features wouldn't net me anything.
