I bet these "affordable" upgradable sensors alone would cost more than X2D and GFX100s. If Leica thinks that it's still 2008 and S is the only compact MF camera they can charge over $20k for, this can be a costly mistake.

Besides the cameras, is the system itself evolving? Any new lenses or accessories have been released during the past few years?

No, but the LuLa-video ("...there will be a lot of future things...", "What I can tell from Leica's side, is that the S-system is a very, very important strategic product line", etc.), the statement at Fotosidan above (post #116), and comments from various visitors at Wetzlar recently show that the S-line is alive and is being further developed. I would be surprised if this doesn't include new lenses...

Jeff S, I wouldn't be surprised if you are correct with the upcoming S3. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the S007 is going to be made upgradeable with different sensor(s) and boards. The S body is mature, only the sensors/boards need changing if desired by the user who lusts after more MPs. Plus Leica clearly knows the S lenses out resolve any current and future industry sensors. So don't be surprised if Leica S users will have a choice in sensors/boards to match their needs/desires and wallets. Nobody in the industry really offers "affordable" upgradable sensors/boards, just expensive and rapidly obsolete backs. October is coming with a number of surprises from Leica...all good news for many Leica users. r/ Mark

I’d be surprised if that were the surprise. As I recall, the CEO that discussed a perpetual M8 upgrade program got fired.

FWIW, the next S would be an S4 (or 5), considering the S2, S006, S007 (and the old S1 back).

id love to see some sample shots of a Leica S prime lens on a 100MP sensor [via adapter obviously]

I looked into getting an adapter for my H6D100c but unfortunately no such thing

Jeff S,  You maybe correct about the S4..S5, but you may recall the recent Leica naming convention for the M10...the M9...then M240...then Leica dropped back to the previous consecutive M number...the M10.  Guess we will see what happens this autumn....perhaps another Leica surprise...the S3....or...?  r/ Mark

PS  I think there is a good chance Leica offers "affordable" sensor/board upgrades for the S007...as a surprise of course...FWIW.

I think it would be fantastic if the new version actually comes with 64 mpix. Actually, I think there is not much reason to go higher for a DSLR-format camera which is designed for mainly handheld shooting. It is interesting to read Ming's considerations comparing 50 with 100: "Having shot tens of thousands of frames with 100MP for the last eighteen months, I can tell you that deploying the difference handheld and consistently is not trivial." He is strategy director of Hasselblad, and should know (see: https://blog.mingthein.com/2018/06/24/crystal-ball-gazing-have-we-reached-a-plateau/).

Therefore I don't think comparisons with far more expensive 100mpix cameras are interesting. Far more interesting would be high ISO performance, fps etc. which extends the usage envelope of the camera system.

PS:I hold the upgrade theory as highly unlikely.

my reply was to this >>"" Plus Leica clearly knows the S lenses out resolve any current and future industry sensors.""

has anyone actually seen 100MP raw files shot with a Leica S prime lens ?

:D

S lens has a shorter flange than H lens. You might be able to adapt dumb to the  X1D or GFX.

would be interesting to see....the Fuji XH1 IBIS is great..i wonder if Fuji will throw that IBIS tech into the GFX100

I wonder which company will break down first and incorporate body and/or lens stabilization in these high MP systems.

And which 100 MP body would that be? Or even 50 MP body? Not in the X1D. The XCD lenses don’t have OIS, not even the forthcoming zoom, where it would be welcomed (like the FF SL 24-90 and 90-280).

If you are designing lenses for an MF system and you are not shooting for 100 MP at least you are not doing it right.

Just taking a guess but that might be Fuji. The IBIS of the X-H1 looks like it was designed with larger sensor sizes in mind. But any kind of image stabilisation becomes much harder with increasing sensor sizes so it’s hard to tell.
