Two EVF questions….

Yes, I have looked at the manual!….But as ever with most manuals they never seem to address what I'd like to sort out, could be wrong but I can't find the answer.

Anyway, is there a setting buried somewhere where you can stop the EVF auto-adjusting the light level when the shutter selection is "Manual"?

Sure I know you can lock a brightness/exposure level in by holding the release halfway but I'd really like to be able to see in realtime what the image would be if I choose to under / over expose in Manual. 

I guess the same question would apply too to the LCD in Live View as well. I'd really like to be able to see the effects of an exposure choice without the LCD/EVF self regulating the image.

 

Also…..Although I'm not likely to use it I tried the GPS setting with the EVF installed today but I keep getting the icon with the "x" that presumably says "no GPS signal" even though my iPhone and my portable car GPS both pick up a signal without a problem. Maybe I've missed yet another setting other than the straightforward GPS on/off in the menu, who knows? Or is the GPS on the M10/EVF a weak receiver?

Turning it ON in the menu is the only thing you have to do.  In my experience, like all GPS receivers, they take some time (at least a few minutes) the first time you turn them on or when you go to a radically different location (like a different city or country) to acquire a lock.  That's because they don't know which satellites are within 'view' and they have to scan all of them to figure out which ones to use.  Once the system acquires enough to lock, it (usually) remembers their identities and looks for them next time you turn it on, so it is much faster.  Cell phones and other GPS receivers do the same thing, although cell phones can get an assist from the cell towers and WiFi to determine the rough location faster.  Also, your cell phone is on all the time, so it's always looking.  If you power it down, fly to a different country, and turn it on it also takes a few minutes to lock (usually).

 

I know a lot of people like to just use their cell phones and some software to apply coordinates.  That's another viable option, especially if you don't use the VisoFlex all the time.  Certainly your cell phone will have a better and more continuous location if you leave it on, of course at the expense of battery since you are running some tracking app in the background.  No free lunch, I'm afraid.

thank you mdemeyer, however I should have said in my original post that I don't get the GPS to "see" any satellites even when turned on and in the open for a good 15 minutes or so when other devices in the same location find contact in less than a minute.

Hmmm?…….the GPS icon is on in the EVF so I guess that means that the camera setting is ok so maybe something's wrong with the Visoflex?

Set Exposure Simulation to Permanent, that's all.

That's not the issue on my screens other than the phone... just annoying... but I guess that's just me. The standard forum typeface and font work fine as is.

ok Jeff sorry about that, it looks ok on my Mac screens but as I gave up the iPhone / mobile 'phone disease some while ago I've no way to check that, ( though I do borrow one when really needed ). However as I'm in the same "squinting" club I'll increase the font size so you can get your noses off the screen, is this font size better?………

 

But I do like the "get a bigger 'phone" comment!

I found that you also have to turn off Auto-ISO too, set the camera to a fixed ISO otherwise the EVF/LCD will still auto-compensate.

 

I've still yet to get the GPS to work, maybe I've a faulty Visoflex. Anyway it was just curiosity on my part, the GPS function is nothing that I need.

Regarding the VisoFlex GPS, I ran a couple tests to get an idea of how long it took to acquire a lock (as indicated by the indicator).  I tested it from my porch with a view of 180 degrees of sky, facing west in Beijing, China.

 

From power off and where the previous VisoFlex use was more than 100 KM away (so it probably had to decide which satellites to use) it took 1 min 12 sec to acquire a usable lock.  During the acquisition time it showed the satellite image with the exclamation point, with the full satellite image appearing at 1:12.

 

I then let the camera go into sleep mode.  When I woke it (pressing the shutter lightly) it took just under 10 seconds to reacquire a good location lock.

 

I then turned the camera completely off with the power switch, let it sit for about 5 minutes, and turned it back on.  Acquired a GPS lock in just under 10 seconds again.

 

So, it appears to me to behave the way most GPS devices do.  I have not done tests yet indoors (will do so), but it's hard to compare to a cell phone there for the reasons I mentioned previously - namely that the phone is on all the time (generally speaking) and can also benefit from WiFi and cell tower methods of location.

Ok, update.

I have no idea why, I've done nothing new in regards to settings etc, neither has the camera moved much at all since I first posted the question but last night the GPS started to work just fine, no problems.

It was probably due to the fact that I first tried it out on a public holiday here, ( Assumption ), and being France nothing worked, including GPS.

Yes you're probably right. I guess I ignored the clue that was in the name of the holiday, "Assumptuion" i.e.; assuming that the French would honour the US's priority.
