potential oil spots on aperture blades?

Hi all,

I recently bought a Noctilux 50/1 from Leicashop.com!

After a long wait, it's finally arrived today.

Upon careful inspection, I found, possibly, oil spots/stains on the aperture blades. (see photo attached)

Does anyone know what exactly these are?

I'd sent email to leicashop.com with my concern as this will definitely affect its re-sale value  should I decided to sell it in the future.

Should I return and get it refunded or ask them to exchange for a different lens?

I am seeking for different opinions and suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like oil.

I had the same problem with my Summilux 50mm ASPH (a known problem with this lens) and had Leica clean it for me.

It will definitely affect resale value, but by the time you come to sell it, its value may have risen enough to offset the cost to clean it.  The oil should not affect functionality or image quality.

Leica shop tend to charge top dollar for their stuff, so I would return it or ask for a partial refund to reflect the flaw.

As for my experience, Leicashop has the way to make maintenance works (dunno if in a lab of their own or outsourced) : my advice is to discuss with them if they can manage the cleaning by themselves.... negotiating the terms...

As above said is a not rare and not critical issue, even if of course, any maintenance job on lenses like Noctilux must be done by skilled technicians.

Thanks for the information. I had contact them already.

It amazes me that for shop like leicashop.com mentioned nothing about this existing condition from both their website and eBay list of this lens. :(

I can understand your disappointment and anoyance with this. It is inconceivable that they were not aware of this issue and would have seen it when they bought the lens in. I think you need to be clear on your prefered outcome, a full refund; a reduced price; or a dismantle/clean. If the latter you need to be sure you have confidence in the technician. The safest option is a full refund. Good luck with whatever you decide and really hope you can get it sorted to your satisfaction .

Overall I am happy with the lens except the stains. It does look annoying but it should not cause too big of issue for now.

I have considered those option suggested. However because I am from Australia. It's a long way sending the lens back for a full refund. As for cleaning, I would rather prefer Leica to clean it for me.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to clean it? Can Leica Australia perform the job? Or do I have to send it back to Germany Leica?

So I would probably ask them to reduce the price to cover the postage and cleaning cost otherwise a full refund.

The marks show a very consistent, repeatable pattern of contact at the same area of each blade, and don't look like oil migrating in to me. I think it looks more like slight rub marks where each blade contacts the next as they move. I'd leave it alone.

Yeah, at first I thought the same. I thought it might be the metal been polished to a shiny metallic finish from years of use. However technician from Leica Wetzlar confirm it's oil greases on the blades and can be cleaned with a cost.

Update:

I received the following email from leicashop.com. I have to say that I am very disappointed with such reply. Their response within this single email contradicted itself. If it took only 10 days in transportation for such grease to "re-occur" then how can one be so confident that it won't get worse?!?!?!

"Thank you for the update.

Before we sent the lens to you, the blades were cleaned by our very experienced technician.

So the oil must have been coming out again while the transportation.

But please be aware that many lenses have oil on their blades and that it does not affect anything. Especially you should not worry with the amount of oil how I see it on your pictures.

You have a 6 month warranty. So if it gets worse (which won’t happen) you are on the safe side!"

Doesn't look like oil to me either and I've had a couple with it. Looks like a little rub spot and nothing to worry about.

Do you mind sharing a photo of yours that has the same grease marks for comparision purpose? Thanks

My email is Arvin.lee@outlook.com

I'd love to but I don't have any. Mine showed oil on the blades along the leading edge and not in one spot like that. With opening and closing the aperture the oil, in my opinion, wouldn't stay in one spot like that.

Hi Luigi,

Do you know if their technicians are reliable?

They offered a pick up of the lens by UPS and they will carry out an inspection and maintenance work from there.

However, with what they are telling me, I am a little reluctant to let them work on the lens again.

Can those grease/oil marks really get to the blades during transportation?

Leica Wetzlar confirmed its oil/ greases mark and can be remediated with about 300 Euro dollars.

Thanks again.

Actually I have had lenses with this. Most likely its oil and it will appear and disappear from time to time. Does not impact use at all. What to worry would be oil stains on lens elements. When storing do so with aperture wide open.

After I got service of one of my lenses at Leica, I got the comment to move the aperture from open to close and turn the focus ring all way through regularly. Could it be that the oil marks are due to the non-usage for a prolonged time?

I read someone suggested in a different forum to keep older lens wide open and newer lens stop down to avoid issue such as this.

Hi Luigi,

eh hum ... it depends...

years ago (8-9) bought a Summicron 35 1st : play of the front element - returned - sent back perfectly OK - no cost

4-5 years ago bought a Summaron 3,5 BM : good at looking, it didn't focus at all..returned, sent back perfectly focusing and with front element mispositioned (180° rotated... f/stop index opposite to normal sight... impossible not to notice immediately...) ; sent back, returned ok with a symbolic freebie (a Leitz plastic box) as excuse... no cost.
