Get a grip -- but which?

I'm getting an M10, but am having trouble deciding -- for grip purpose -- between the Leica Half Case and the Leica Hand Grip. Does anyone have a sense of how "good" the half case grip is?  I have the hand grip on my Leica Q, and like it.  But, the half case is cheaper and it does do other things as well, such as provide slight bump protection, etc.  I'm pretty sure the hand grip would provide better grip than the half case, but if the half case provides good grip anyway, as well as some bump protection, maybe a degree of shutter muffling, etc., perhaps that would be the way to go. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The Leica hand grip + a hand made half case, made by angelo pelle or another "half case" or "bag" designer from Italy.

I think the hand grip would prevent the use of a half case.

I have both for my M10 but little experience with them yet. I also use and like the Leica thumb rest. The protector case + thumb rest has an excellent fit and feel in my opinion. I anticipate using the hand grip alone when I am working indoors with a tripod, flash, etc. and having the display, hot shoe, rear controls uncovered is higher priority than protection. The leather case front grip is more subtle than the hard grip but works fine the the case + thumb rest configuration. You should try the variations in a store if possible.

I used Leica's grip on my M240, but for the M10 I went with the protector case and I prefer it. The grip is more subtle, but works fine and I like having the cover for the rear LCD. The case seems well made and is easy to remove and reinstall. I do wish that you didn't have to remove it to replace the battery or access the SD card, but that's a whole other issue. I do use the Leica add on thumb grip as well.

I have the Leica half case and liked it for its comfortable grip, protection of the camera body and it looks good, especially with a matching strap

Problem is if you have shoot a lot and have to change battery often. Rather cumbersome

The M10 also gets hot and I feel uneasy using it in 30C heat. The camera feels way too hot.

So in summer I switch to the Leica hand grip

I slapped on a Really Right Stuff ARCA plate with the grip attachment. Like it a lot. Very positive and confidence building that I'm not going to drop the camera, which tends to happen when you initially pick it up.

Also has a boss for a Magpul sling attachment, which is about as secure as it gets. And it works on your tactical ninja rifle, too, should the zombie apocalypse arrive. ;)

I just received the M10 grip yesterday and installed my medium sized finger loop onto it. In combination with the Leica thumbrest, it gives exactly the feel I was looking for- the camera feels attached like an extension of my body, and I don't feel like I have to consciously grip it in order to have a secure hold on it.

I also have the Leica black leather half case which I used a little bit in combination with the thumbrest- those two work fairly well together, but I like being able to walk around with a wrist strap and without tiring my hand out actively holding onto the camera, which is what the grip + finger loop allows me to do.

I'm not sure yet but I may end up selling my M10 half case as I frankly don't forsee using it much unless I want a measure of protection.

I once bought this wonderfull Luigi halfcase for my M9, real nice, a thing to have, expecially because I have it in military green, but then aged, somit's not military anymore, but some dark Greek or Turk olive. I use it in rare situations.

Because I own and use the Summilux75 and Summicron90APO very often I really needed a grip on my M10. Also because I had felt it before in the shop and it struck me as a very velvety metal grip, also a very nice thing to have. Besides, it has been constructed so that it fits as a panty around the body. This one I really use, I hate to unmount it when that's necessary for the EVF to come in.

The half-case increases thickness but has a small bump on the front that improves handling & aesthetics slightly. The grip is a grip which can swing dangerously from your fingers. It depends what effect you're after. Try both extensively in the Leica store before deciding :)

???? Very unlikely. This could count for the built-in thumbgrip on the body, but not for the separate M10 grip.

I'm a first time Leica M buyer, I expect to receive my M10 in a week or so. Are some users satisfied with holding the camera sans any additional grip additions (grip, thumb device, or halfcase)?

Yes with smaller lenses like 35cron, Elmar50, summarit 50, 35, etc. I can do without, even with Summicron 28 asph I can do without, but the Summilux 35FLE, or any other Summilux is the turning point

I did for a while and it's fine. But I've always used a Thumbie and I prefer it now it's attached. I have an RRS grip and plate and I really like it but I use the camera without unless I need to (tripod use, 90 and 135mm lens use, long shooting days). I'm more than happy with just a Thumbie up to 75mm.

Otto, with the 35 lux, what do you add for improved grip?

The Leica separate thumb grip we are talking about here which is excellent and very smooth in your hands

Life is short. I use no protectors, leather or neoprene. The chance that we will damage our Leica without such is small enough to ignore, and considering the hassle of the covering it balances to negative benefit to use a covering.

The M10, IMO, is more easily held naked than the M240, but for various reasons I still added an RRS grip.  I dislike neck straps, like the idea of an metal exoskeleton for added protection and I've found that its easier hold position for longer periods with the grip. For me, that offsets the added bulk. Not to contradict Pico, but once with the M240, photographing at the shore, I slipped on a wet rock, went down camera in hand.   It hit straight into another rock, catching the lower left corner of the camera.  If I didnt have the RRS grip in place, it might have meant a new camera. Dusted it and myself off and thankfully no issues.  YMMV, of course, but for me the RRS's utility outweighs the added size.
