LocalHero1953 Posted June 13, 2017 Share #2 Posted June 13, 2017 What do you want to use it for? On or off camera? What flash modes? What power? Bounce flash?
Simon Posted June 13, 2017 Share #3 Posted June 13, 2017 Leica use rebranded Metz flashes so you can get a Metz flash of equivalent performance and pay less.
LocalHero1953 Posted June 13, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 13, 2017 Leica use rebranded Metz flashes so you can get a Metz flash of equivalent performance and pay less. Yes, but the Metz equivalents don't have the same TTL functionality as the Leica versions - Leica's are not straight rebrands.
jaapv Posted June 13, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 13, 2017 If you want full functionality only a Leica flash will work. The venerable SF24D is still quite compact and sufficiently powerful for most situations, but it does not tilt. It is easily found used. The SF 26 is of course the modern choice, but pricey. If you want to use another brand of flash, any flash with an A setting will do. The choice is endless.
franafricano Posted June 13, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted June 13, 2017 I want to use the flash for Street photography. The SF24 is compatibly with the Leica M10, no?
jaapv Posted June 13, 2017 Share #7 Posted June 13, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) It should be; I have not heard of any incompatability. I have no M10, so I did not use the combo myself. It works well as fill flash. The look-alike SF20 has no TTL capability.
Luke_Miller Posted June 13, 2017 Share #8 Posted June 13, 2017 I want to use the flash for Street photography. The SF24 is compatibly with the Leica M10, no? I would expect it to be, but the SF24D may not be a good choice for street photography if used in TTL mode. The pre-flash cycle is a bit longer than later Leica flashes and gives the subject an opportunity to react or blink. A Mode solves that issue but then opens up many more flash choices as jaapv pointed out.
Guest Posted June 13, 2017 Share #9 Posted June 13, 2017 The SF-40 is an excellent flash and very versatile for such a small unit.
bocaburger Posted June 13, 2017 Share #10 Posted June 13, 2017 SF24D is what I have used since the M8. I found that the same Omnibounce diffuser that fits my Metz MZ53 also slips over the head of the 24D at sort of an angle and I have not missed the lack of a tilt feature. My only gripe with the 24D is it uses lithium batteries. They're good for a lot of shots, but not rechargeable. As someone said, TTL flash requires pre-flashing, which adds a bit of lag, and pre-warns the subject. I have never used the 24D in TTL, only A mode. What I like about it vs the host of generic flashes I also own, is the 24D can be set for many different apertures. Typically the generic auto-eye flashes only have 2 or 3 settings. Also, Nikon off-camera flash extension cables work on the M cameras retaining full functionality.
