Summicron 35 ASPH manufacturing mistake?

Hello

I recently purchased a mint Summicron 35 ASPH. It seems to barely have been used, and the serial number starts with 420xxxx, which indicates that it was manufactured just a few years ago.

I prefer to use the lens without the hood, and I noticed that I was having issues setting the correct aperture some times. I didn't think too much of it, and I thought that the white line was on the hood only, probably, and that was the reason.

Then I suddenly looked at the bottom of the lens, and I can see the white line that I'm used to being there from every other lens I've owned. So it seems like whoever assembled this lens at the factory did a mistake here? I'm guessing it's not supposed to be this way?

Hello Indergaard,

Probably just an assembly or a re-assembly after service error.

It can probably just be opened up & "turned around" by someone who knows what they are doing.

If the person/place you got it from is not able to correct this, most likely, any competent Leica lens repair person can easily do this.

Enjoy your lens.

Best Regards,

Michael

Just checked my 35mm Summicron Asph and you are indeed correct. The white line is at the top of the lens not as yours is at the bottom.

As you are of course aware, you need the white line at the top if using the lens without the lens hood. If you use it with the hood then there are two white lines top and bottom on the hood so it doesn't matter as it will fit either way and the aperture setting white line on the lens is covered by the lens hood and the aperture is set using the line on the hood.

I assumed so. Thanks for checking and verifying it. I'm not gonna use the hood, as I prefer this lens for it's size without the hood.

I've sent an email to Leica CS to ask what they think about it. This lens was manufactured only about 2 years ago according to the serial number, and it has never been serviced after leaving the factory. So the assembly error must have happened before the lens left the Leica factory.
