SD card can be taken out but the inside memory (RAM or ROM) is always there "memorized" with secondary battery which has to be charged by the main battery once a while.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks very much. BTW, this M9 has 7306 activations. It makes me feel like a cradle robber.

Is there a relation between the number of actuations and the number of "good" pictures ?    Who will be the first to ask "what is a good picture"?

99.9 % of mine are good pictures for me, if:

- I keep only for my own use

- I use only Noctilux

- the subjects please me (or please my wife, 100% if please two of us )

 

After all, those are only pictures nothing more.

There are out there so many real things much more important than pictures.

Where is the shutter activation count really stored? I got another new-to-me M9, and M9info.app shows the count, and so does the maintenance menu with the SD card removed.

I was in market last year for a used Hasselblad. In my part of the world Hasselblad has very few owners but was able to zero down on a seller who was also in market to sell his H4D-31 with 2 HC lenses and 1 HCD lens. He claimed that he had picked it up at B&H in 2016 brand new. When I looked at the camera it was cosmetically in a very poor condition, lenses had dust and back screen of the back was slightly chipped in a corner. But seller wanted $12500 for it. When I asked him about actuations he said around 26000. I felt that it was a heavy used one and roughly handled at that. Better sense prevailed and I refused to buy it. A friend of mine took the risk and bought it. Within one month of use he found dead pixels, back stopped working and he was sitting with a dud body and 3 lenses with no buyers. He now bought a Fuji GFX 50s and a mount fir HC lenses and is using them.

 

Main purpose of the story is to highlight that electronics have a life and in today’s world obsolescence catches up fast. Leica bodies are of much better built but electronics are difficult to predict. Technology is changing rapidly, newer sensor technologies are being released offering higher ISOs, more mega pixels and what not. IMHO no DSLR of any kind is worth retaining beyond 3-5 years. Buying used bodies is a bigger gamble as you never know how the previous owner treated them and particularly when they are outside the warranty.

 

Higher the use of technology in the camera faster it will become obsolete. Also someone above has highlighted that shutter count is not the only thing in a body with video feature. Preferably one should go for latest technology and latest models to avoid the obsolescence scare and to enjoy the warranty. That is my philosophy and if I cant afford a particular model I avoid it but generally avoid pre owned bodies till I know the owner and its usage.

I have M10, Monochrom, SL and CL and have renamed the image numbers for each as L,M, S and C and try to keep the same cards for the different bodies. That way there is no chance of frame numbers being transported from one body to another; but more importantly, it stops duplication of image numbers into Lightroom.
