Why not first get a small, light backpack that can easily attach a travel pod that is out of the way until you need it, like a Think Tank Trifecta or one of their Streetwalker series.

Jeff

Why didn't i think of that ...............Perfect, now lets find the correct backpack/tripod combination. I'm just away to buy an Osprey Hydration pack for my cycling escapades, maybe I could use that??

I'll second a clamp, I used to have a ROWI clamp with a ball head, I used it so much it wore out and fell apart. I'll also agree of the Jobi Gorilla Pod comment above, I have a couple of different sizes, they are handy but not stable, the slightest breeze or vibration will wobble the camera.

I have rummaged in my drawers and found a Trek-Tech T-pod which folds down to nothing and would hold an SL + Noctilux. Connectors are magnetic.

That would get you off the ground a bit ..... but probably not as high as you want.

Not sure it's still available ...... and there was a much taller Trekpod Go Pro. Try Ebay. http://www.trek-tech.com/products/trekpods.html

That Trex Tech Pod looks amazing............B&H had them but no longer same as Amazon....sh!t

Okay back to the drawing board with the backpack and lightweight tripod

I gave you some good suggestions from Think Tank.... two different series, each of which has 3 different sizes. Several of them have an extended, concealed flap for longer tripod legs. There are videos and reviews on all.

You could also use a monopod.... and double it as a walking stick.

And you can use this strap technique for longer exposures...

If you don't care about the Gitzo pedigree, the Promaster 525c (carbon) has similar specs and costs $300....lighter, but an inch longer, also with integrated head. And one leg detaches as a monopod. I know one pro who travels with one.

There are many threads here on travel tripods...and backpacks.

Are you going to give all this to family with your SL?!

My favorite travel (tri)pod, the Monomatic, also made of unobtanium.

Made by Linhof (looks almost like the Porsche sign).

Okay so the tripod that Jeff suggested would have been fine but its not available in Malaysia. This one however is https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822143-REG/Sirui_BSRT2205_T_2205X_5_Section_Carbon_Fiber.html  and a 1/3 of the price of the gitzo. It also has fantastic reviews and best of all its available in Malaysia :) :)

So what about a bag. Well I have decided to do this. The Siri tripod comes with a case and a strap, when I'm going on a walk about (for example when I'm in Japan) I like to wear one of those photographers kaki jackets, you know the ones with like 37 pockets, and a floppy hat..........yep I look like a right knob :) :) :)  but hay who cares nobody knows me in Japan (yet). My plan will be to have the SL around my neck or over a shoulder, and put the 3 spare lenses in the kaki jacket. and carry the tripod over my shoulder.....job done :) :)

Pictures to follow

This option, and others, have been discussed here before. My point was that you didn't need to spend so much on the Gitzo... the Promaster is 30% of the cost (and its non-carbon version is half that). The Siriui is a viable alternative.

Likewise, there are dozens of carry options, and as many discussions. All personal preference

Good that you landed on one.

Another photographer had the Sirui with his small SLR kit. It was not very stable. Stable enough for 1/2s but not for 4mins.

For down to 1/2s, i second (bad pun) the monopod from Jeff. With the Acratech baseplate with an arca swiss compatible clamp. I have the RRS L-Plate for the SL to switch between vert and horiz shots.

There are also manfrotto and other monopods with 3 feet.

I have the even smaller Sirui T-024X. It holds my SL with one simple addition. A nodal slider....

Gordon

Whats a  "nodal slider" mate??

From the title of the original posting, I gather that the author was not looking for a budget option. Hence, Gitzo is probably the only brand to consider. Just think about basalt vs carbon.

Personally, I use magnesium tripods with SL. Albeit somewhat heavier, they are more stable than carbon and do not get fragile in sub-zero temperatures.
