M262 while waiting for M10 to be more easily available?

Hi all,

I asked this question in the M10 availability thread but it got missed by debates on marketing ploys....

Anyway, had an SL and 24-90 for a year. Happy with it but - heavy....and although my first Leica, it didn't scratch my itch for a RF!

So my choice is either to wait for an M10, realistically in Autumn, or maybe pre Xmas - or get another RF now so as to (a) confirm I really like it enough to buy an M10 and (B) not lose a summer of photography.

So thinking of a used M262 on basis if I like RF as much as I hope, then easily sold/part-exchanged for the M10.

Any comments pls?

Thanks.

If it were me, and it was the M10 that was truly desired, I'd begin a regular, very active search for one.  I'd be surprised if anyone who does that isn't able to get one within a couple months.

M262 is a wonderful M, lightness that no other digital M can compare.

I use one since released last year: it was what I waited for long (before M10 ! ).

But M10 is something else "M262 with some bonus", if not for lower photos count battery and a bit heavier.

If you don't need liveview, M262 is as good as M10.

Concerning image quality, I can't see difference M10/M262 with same lens.

Concerning budget thing:

- in France, second hand M262 at 4000 € is not a good buy, maybe if you can buy cheaper it would be a good choice

- when you buy M10 in future, take into account that M262 would loose more by then

For me, I suggest that you begin a search for M10, as Jager said you may find one before autumn ;) .

Last word, each is a nice M with joy to use.

Here side by side the two brothers M10 and M 262

As seen here, the few millimeters can be barely seen and feel in hand ;)

Selling my 262 (currently listed by London dealer) with a certain reluctance as it was a nice camera to use. But after 3+ months, my M10 arrived and I like the option of fitting EVF with enlarged focus. Improved rangefinder window means anyone with reading glasses can use them when focusing. Does not feel heavier than the 262 probably because slimmer body is nicer in the hand. I am told that Leica Mayfair is quoting September for earliest likelihood of getting one…..

Hi Big John!

I have got SL 601 and SL 24-90/ f 2.8-4.0 over one year. I like to shoot M Apo 50 f2 and M Lux 75 f1.4 on SL by Peaking assisstance. I still like this combo for shooting the event and children by Auto Focus.

I have just got M10 Silver and I happy to shoot with my both M lens for Portrait, Street life ... It is easy to focus by RF (day time) or Peaking & enlarge focus on LV (nice time) since I wear the glass! Other option is additional EVF Visoflex 002.

I think it will worth to wait M10 since You have on hand SL and SL 24-90.

Have a nice day!

Thanks!

If it is an M you must have and your SL is insufficient, I would pick one closer to the bottom of the depreciation curve.  An M240 can be had for less than an M262, will depreciate less, and give you video to play with that even the M10 will not have.  Of course an M6, M7, or MP to give you access to film would be a nice idea too.

Hi all,

Have to say that this is such a great forum for when you want to air thoughts and get advice - thanks to everyone for replying.

Having handled a 262 today, I like it. Some thoughts:

- I have a love/doubt relationship with the M, never owned one, always wanted one!

- guess my concerns are about using anything above 50mm and fact that the frameline size gets smaller as lens gets longer

- but love the build, look, feel and IQ

- my first camera was an Olympus OM10 as an 18 year old, then Nikons up to an F5; then Fuji digital then SL

- I know I have to own an M, use it/shoot it....and decide if to keep, so getting a used one now is a kind of trial while M10 wait times normalise, used means depreciation not really an issue

So couple of questions pls:

1. Centred weighted metering only with M262: any concerns?

2. Any particular pitfalls to look out for with a used 262?

3. Difference to a used M-P240 is £900; worth it? Or avoid temptation based on my rationale for the purchase now?

Thanks

1. More success than with my Q, which tends to overexpose.

3. A lot to spend on live view and older model probably had more usage, as your plan is to buy to fill in time.

I just googled out of curiosity and it seems they have the 262 sets in the UK as well, there the deal has the 35mm lense in US its 50

That should make much more sense then buying preowned even if you have to sell the lense, flash and bag to fund a different lense

I sold my M262 in late 2016 in anticipation of moving to the M10, but, not knowing about the long M10 delivery times that are a reality.  I went about 2 1/2 months without a camera in the interim till my M10 arrived.  That made me question my decision to sell a perfectly great and new M262.  I wish I had 2 M bodies now.  So I can understand your rationale for the M262.  I actually find the M10 to blow highlights on very sunny, contrasty days (as documented in some reviews) whereas I never had that problem with my M262.

1)  Owning and using all of the above, since the M6, I use my Leica cameras in center-weighted mode.  While all require some degree of interpreting the reasonableness of the measurement, these are not 1000 point cyber meters, the M262 proved to be more finicky.  My review:  https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/254800-m262-a-few-musings-after-a-week-of-shooting-in-florida/

3)  Benefits to me for the extra price would be the option for video, double memory buffer, and a sapphire screen cover.  An M-P240 is a keeper, at least until the next video-capable M comes out, an M240 would be a capable, low-depreciation gap filler while you wait for your M10.
