I glanced out my back window a few minutes ago because I heard a red-winged blackbird making a distress call. This Cooper's hawk was just a few feet away and the red-winged blackbird was going to die protecting its nest. I intervened.

Dee, Euston and Jaap, thanks much. Dee, I've also been amazed by the bird activity here. I think it's partly that we've planted things that attract them, but also partly the effect of global warming. There are now bird species here that never used to venture this far north. Our growing zone has also changed in the same way.
