proenca Posted April 16, 2017 Author Share #21 Posted April 16, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I work with S 006 and SL, both are great and I love to work with them but for my taste both are way too big for walk around cameras. Ever tried the Q? It´s amazing and even at 50mm the 9MP resolution is enough for printing. ... it´s not the MP that counts, it´s the lens;-) Best, Peter__ True, but for that, I already have the Q's big brother, ie, the lens : 28mm Summilux M
Advertisement Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 Hi proenca, Take a look here who still uses the S (006/SE/S2) still today ? thinking about getting in agian. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
proenca Posted April 16, 2017 Author Share #22 Posted April 16, 2017 Can't take anything but the best on such trips. I'm bit younger - 40 - and after getting married, specially now after our kids are born, I sold the fast cars, the hobbies, apart from photo stuff. Where I spend quite a bit of money, few thousands per year - is on trips. Afterall, one thing that can't be bought and were you can influence your children, is with knowledge of the world and beautiful memories. And that sentence of yours, is what I'm afraid - I'm worried that if I buy the SL, I'll be left wondering "damn, wish I could have a S here". Of course, if my wet dream is taking pictures on a cave at midnight, I might cry for the SL, but so far, not really
proenca Posted April 16, 2017 Author Share #23 Posted April 16, 2017 Me: S-E (Typ 006) about 1300 shutter actuations per month. proenca Posted April 16, 2017 Author Share #24 Posted April 16, 2017 I will take an SL + 2 lenses on a walking trip in May, but I'll wish I had the S(006) for every shot. The reason I'm going with the SL is speed. It's not my trip, it's not for photography, and I don't want to slow everyone else down. And, even though the 24-90 is large and heavy, it's lighter than the S 24. In fact, SL+WATE+24-90 weighs almost a pound less than S(006)+24. But S(006) and S glass is still my favorite. I've used cameras with better lenses and more pixels and still prefer the S. --Matt Take the S and say a lot of "sorry, I'll catch you guys up in a sec" ? perhaps printing it on tshirt for every participant ? tom0511 Posted April 16, 2017 Share #25 Posted April 16, 2017 I also own M/SL and S and just shoot for fun. A lot of it family photos. Most beautiful ones are with the S. Specially skin rendering and bokeh are special IMO. On the other side the 24-90 on the SL is really fast and very flexible. The 50SL is as big (bigger) as the 70S, and the 50SL does not focus fast. SO IMO the big advantage of the SL would be the flexibility of the zoom and you can use your M lenses. But you once had a S and still remember the special IQ. In this case I would go back to the S system, the SL is good IQ but the S is better.

Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted April 16, 2017 Share #27 Posted April 16, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lugging: I guess it depends on body, strength, stamina. I don't find there is a huge difference with the SL+zoom, and the S (depends on the lens). When I travel or go by car, I have the S "suitcase" which I find very practical. In July I will take it to Kashgar and the Karakoram Highway in China. Can't take anything but the best on such trips. I am 60+ but physically strong. And I have a helpful wife ;-) You hit it on the nail......... why would you go on a photo trip and leave the best camera at home. I've been using my S007 here in Phuket, looking at the files nothing that I have right now compare to the S images
ynp Posted April 17, 2017 Share #28 Posted April 17, 2017 The famous JIP read your article about Contax lenses on the S a few times plan buying the adapter as soon as possible as well ! Please buy a Contax adapter. The 55 мм Distagon is very light and handy. It works well on the midrange distances and the foreground is beautiful. The background is also delicious when it's no foliage. It works as a portrait lens and landscape lens and can serve the role of a body cap, did I tell you all that the 55мм is light. The 45mm on a small sensor of Leica S works better than on the 645 for landscape applications, no problem with corners at f2,8. The Leica 45mm is better, but its heavier and costs too much. And I am sure that autofocus works at all times. I add my S120 Makro or S100/2 and I am ready for a photo Trip. My S24 is broken, the Zoom is too heavy and they stay home. F2 Distagon, as a universal lens, before the Leica 55 /2.8 introduced in 2018 , and another one -- a light and unique Planar 80mm/2.0. It's have a very nice signature at short distances and it's fun to shoot women and anything pretty wide open. It's a quirky Contax Summilux. hoppyman Posted April 17, 2017 Share #36 Posted April 17, 2017 Silly question : how is the AF comparable between SL vs S ? is the S much slower than the SL ? The fundamental difference of course is that you have only the single central AF point with the S bodies whereas you can place it nearly anywhere of use groups or use lots of options with the SL. I suppose it depends much on how you use the cameras. Other factors might be where the focus barrel is sitting when you activate AF (and the distance range that you typically work at), stationary or moving subjects, AF mode etc. In my specific circumstances (in studio) I don't notice either is slower. Take it out for moving subjects and try to use AFC and the answer (for me) is very different. On the other hand with the SL in available roomlight with backlit subject and I have been caught more than once with the SL because the finder is so dark (reflecting the exposure settings) that I couldnt see a damn thing to align the AF point
Peter E Posted April 17, 2017 Share #37 Posted April 17, 2017 Interesting topic Coming from a M9, sold it to fund a new MP240, sold this to fund a new SL. I use those cameras only with my M lenses (35 8 element, 50 nocti f1, 75 lux). But, I'm also serious thinking to go for a S2 or typ 006 because I really like the IQ, rendering, depth and feeling I have watching S (ccd)files. This weekend I looked at a lot of my photos I've shoot over the years and 1 thing came up: I like the M9 images more then the other ones, they have the look and feel I love, I didn't see this on my M240 and I don't see this on my SL. The SL gives more clinical files and they are nice but I miss 'the feeling/emotion and sphere'... So, I think the ccd sensor renders the type of files I like and the only way to have it back is going for a M9 or ccd S camera which I think will be superior The dilemma I have is now is keeping or selling the SL, keeping or selling M lenses, .... this to fund a S system Regards Peter

I plan also to buy the 30mm now( can't stretch to get the 24mm ) and afterwords, when I get a bit more funds down the road, trade teh 30mm for a 24mm and get the Contax 35mm. 35mm, 55mm they will come for sure. As well the 120macro and 140mm for fun. I'm also mighty tempted with the 350mm for a bit of wildlife in an African trip I have in December,
jip Posted April 17, 2017 Share #39 Posted April 17, 2017 From the Contax system the ones that shine on the Leica S are the following in my opinion: 35mm 55mm 120mm 140mm (dreamy but nice) 210mm (light weight 210mm lens with great performance!) The one I don't like so much is the 45mm very bad performance compared to the other Contax lenses (I've had 3 of them so it's not just the one lens...) The 80mm is special, but can't win from the Leica 70mm... so rarely use it.
jip Posted April 17, 2017 Share #40 Posted April 17, 2017 I'm also mighty tempted with the 350mm for a bit of wildlife in an African trip I have in December, The 300mm Hasselblad performs better on the Leica S than the 350 from Zeiss... You'll need a separate adapter though... See the following album with some of the Hasselblad 300mm pictures! https://www.flickr.com/photos/jipvankuijk/albums/72157663297936552 It's great, fast autofocus, and very precise. And has a central shutter which works up till 1/750th of a second... Nice for tripod use for even less shutter vibration. Also: the Zeiss 350 is way more expensive... so if you're lucky you can get the hasselblad + adapter for the price of just a 350mm Zeiss... That way it opens even another world of lenses: Hasselblad H lenses. Just a few thoughts
