Studio flash?

I've been using a couple of Elinchrom rx 400s and a hss set up on a Nikon d810. As a new user of the SL I love the camera and will dump the Nikon, but does anyone have experience using an SL with these or similar (or any) studio flash? Leica isn't on the Elinchrom list of compatible cameras, but my M9 used to work with the usual M9 flash firing restrictions.

Several months ago somebody mentioned that he is using elinchrome flash controller. I don't remember the details and have no experience with it. Maybe try a search for elinchrome on the forum search engine.

So it will probably work (in flash trigger mode, no hss or advanced modes).

You will need to buy the Elinchrom trigger for Nikon for it to work on the SL using Elinchrom lights.

I should add that I set the power of the lights manually; I'm not sure if you can adjust it via the wireless triggers as I have not tried that.

I use my SL in my studio with Broncolor flash setup (portrait and product). No problems at all, works fine

With the Broncolor remote you can set the lights wireless, shouldn't be different with Elinchrome...

If you use a SL lens, you can even use the tab to focus function (tab on screen were to focus).

Thanks for replies all. That's encouraging. The trouble with flash is, if it doesn't work one is inclined to think 'maybe I got a setting wrong.' If someone else has made it work I can console myself and persist.

 

I should add that I set the power of the lights manually; I'm not sure if you can adjust it via the wireless triggers as I have not tried that.

It definitely works as I was shooting Elinchrom quadra lights over the weekend with their wireless trigger.

Skyports work perfectly. SL won't do TTL, obviously but I use Quadras extensively with my SL. I don't use HSS but the SL will happily sync up to 1/250th with wireless triggers.

I use the SL with Profoto strobes (B1, D1, D2) and a Profoto air remote. This is my set up for the Nikon D810 which I also shoot as well. Why do you need to dump the D810? I love the SL but the image quality of the D810 is arguably still best in class for full frame.

Thanks for the reply. If by image quality you mean number of pixels you are right, though I think there is a great deal more to IQ than pixel count. But I found carrying a Nikon d810 plus lenses was always a pain (literally - I've suffered frozen shoulder twice) as opposed to carrying the SL with some M lenses. Despite a bit of forum moaning about focussing the SL with manual lenses I think the focus peaking is excellent - many photographers started out in like with manual focussing and it's why we use Ms. I don't feel I need the extra pixels from the D810 in outputs - the image quality on imac or regular prints on the SL is terrific. So, despite some good points in the Nikon and its lenses it has become supernumerary. I won't be buying a second SLas backup (!) but I have an M9.

 

ps D810 + 70-200 is over 3 kilos

I also work fine with Broncolor flash system as long as you adjust light manually and without the need of HSS or TTL control.  I can even control power of individual light and pack remotely on PC or with an RFS transmitter on top of SL ...................

A new flash controller (Control A Hot Sync (Leica) ) for Leica cameras has been announced by Priolite.

With their own studio flashes it allows sync times as low as 1/8000th of a second.

This seems to be the stuff that many users of studio flashes have been waiting for.

Flash as easy as on CaNikon, no manual control needed ? Eagerly waiting for the first test reports with the SL.

this is a great news, but this new controller can only be used for priolite, kinda hate it. Any chance other company is working on the same trigger?

I also switched from d800 to SL and am really happy. Yet for different reasons as it seems. SL + 90-280 weights the same as its counterpart and so does the 24-90. Although I love my M-Lenses I find myself now lugging the Leica varios around. No gain in that regard. So if weight and bulk is your main reason for switching, you might wanna think twice.

yes I have a 24-90 now as event photography has to be in focus and I can't do it that quickly unless everything is f11. but for everything else i use the m lenses. i dont have the 90 280 and have no plans to acquire one. if Leica manage a 35 and a 90 for the SL I may get rid of the vario and acquire those

Bought mine last week. It is a marvel of a lens. If I would  earn my living with events I wouldn't pass on it. The IS alone makes it superior to the upcoming 90 - just handheld a perfectly sharp shot of a static subject with 280mm at 1/10s....

 

I don't  feel the weight when the camera is over my shoulder. When shooting a lot it becomes a welcome addition to my neglected work-out visits at the gym though...

 With my Canon 1D I was using the 17-40, 24-70 and 70-200. With the SL, somehow I've delayed in getting the 90 280. I think I'm getting older and got lazy about the longer end    I only use the longer end sparingly but they are usually my best shots in an event so I have to get over that laziness

I'm using Profoto and the SL triggers faultlessly with the generic trigger or the pc terminals via pocket wizards. Not with my Profoto canon specific remote triggers though.
