There are many wonderfully named towns, villages and hamlets in the British Isles. This is the name-sign posted on the village green of one a mere ten miles from where I sit. A village through which I drive through very often on my visits to the Kent countryside.

Today I decided to stop for a moment in order that I might take the time neccessary to grab a snap;

I drove through Yorkshire on holiday years ago and passed through the hamlet of Bedlam and I saw a signpost saying "Bedlam, please drive carefully."

This hit my funny bone and I had to stop and take a picture, which I've since lost but here's the proof. :lol:

That's absolutely priceless, Pete!

I'm sure the 'locals' in villages such as these must have developed, over the years, an appreciative sense of humour towards their towns' names.

There's probably the makings of a thread dedicated to town names. In Norway, for instance, there is a village named 'Hell' which clearly offers many opportunities for witticisms about where people are either from or else headed...

Just a mile or so before one arrives at the cross-channel ferry port of Newhaven the road passes through a tiny hamlet named 'Tarring Neville'. As I pass the town's name-sign I always wonder 'Who was Neville and Why was he Tarred?'. I suspect a quick 'google' would answer both questions but somehow I'd rather simply let my mind go wandering down increasingly unlikely pathways...

Philip.
