thanks so much, HighlandK, for the good points.

Googling, I found this:

and this supplies some of the technical details that you allude to:

and terrific Lightroom tips here:

I am slightly puzzled by no mention or evidence of focus shift. With my M8 there was a lot of guesswork with setting the distance and making corrections. Is 28mm the reason for superb definition?

I guess that’s right. With a 28mm at f/8 you are pretty much in focus from the end of your nose to infinity. F/8 provides enough DoF to cover the differential focus between IR and visible.

shooting a bit more--and getting much, much better results because of guidance from above (I mean from you folks, not folks in heaven!) and with a far better sun. Using Lightroom--especially the point curve--is a barrel of monkeys (which would be fun to shoot in infrared, BTW), and definitely shoot in RAW and convert. I shot both, and far more information (of course) from dng files. My suggestion: take the raw file and do everything first (including use a color profile) and only then convert to monochrome.

More fun with infrared (but nothing so good as zampelis, who is one of our masters! what a brilliant shot!)

These are some amazing shots Bags! I can clearly see a big progress on your IR photos! As for the mastery, I don't consider myself anything else than an amateur that follows a couple of compositional rules.. Still learning, we all learn constantly. The master here is RK+Q, who's amazing experience in IR cameras and his stunning IR shots, motivated us all to start experimenting with this intriguing type of photography!

Edit:

By the way I strongly believe that we need another thread for the IR photography in Q. Any volunteer to create one?

Maybe RK+Q will start one. He / she kicked this off and deserves the honor of starting it. I received my Hoya filter yesterday. I’m looking forward to using it this weekend. Stsy tuned!

Thanks so much, zampelis.

My graveyard shot was inspired by looking at the infrared threads on flickr. It's interesting to see how others approach this. Some obviously like to keep the RAW/dng magenta and/or start from there and work in other colors, probably in PS.

I'm finding that my favorite LR B&W preset for infrared is "Punch" (and I go from there and have now made my own preset). I'd like to download additional B&W presets, but not sure where to look for those.

first good one with my new flash. thank goodness for digital: you can shoot endless numbers of trial shots in order to figure out the right settings.
