At first I thought the answer to your question was simple.  The people in the foreground are moving fast and the drummer is not moving at all.

However, I notice the drummer's hands are not blurred.  You would think that if he was playing the drums, his hands would be moving and therefore blurry.  So there is a possibility that he was pausing in his playing, making the whole image sharp.

The alternative is that, as you said, the photographer combined two images.  That seems hard for me to believe, especially since I think the lack of movement in the hands doesn't add much to the photo.  It seems unlikely to me that the photographer would combine two images just to make the hands sharp instead of blurry.

So interesting thoughts, but no definite conclusion.

Kudos to the photographer for an excellent image :).

On the contrary, I think the lack of motion adds tension to the shot, it made me stop and question what I was seeing beyond a 'nice' picture. It somewhat reminds me of the Bresson puddle shot in that regard. IMHO if the hand were blurred it would just be a nicely timed photo through the gap in the people.

Come on Snoopy, do tell. Did you luck this one, skill with the Q or 'produce'. Either way I'm still drawn to look at it over and over. Top shot for me.
