I admire your focusing skills. This is still a challenge for me with the Q - finding the right mode for the right situation. Any tips on how you manage shots like this with fidgeting subjects?

Thanks. I confess that it's a challenge for me as well, but I keep at it and have some successes. I have now moved to the single focus point and tied the metering to that same point.

I also very much enjoy manual focusing. It would be better if there was a movable point in manual focusing that it would zoom in on. We can hope for that in the future. Focus peaking is very very helpful. I found myself yesterday photographing the Gecko manually. I'd get close then move the camera just a little back and forth until the focus peaking lit up in the area I wanted most sharp. That was cool.

Good luck. I'm enjoying the Q. Not perfect, but very satisfying to use.

A tale of two Leica's (sort-of). My son had a simple registry office wedding today to his fiancée and I did the photography. Because of a back injury the best I could handle was my Leica Q (28mm, obviously) and my Panasonic GX8 with a Lumix Leica DG 25/1.4 Summilux. I class the GX8 as the camera that Leica should re-badge as the digital CL.

Now, there is a lot of rubbish talked about m43rds cameras. They are just as capable as any camera if used appropriately. I will state that the Leica Q is an astonishing camera. Each photograph I have taken wide open is so sharp I could cut myself on it and the colour rendition is outstanding. But the GX8 and its PanaLeica also performs very well, although it cannot match sharpness or lack of colour noise when you pixel peep. But for reasonable sized reproductions on the web or in print together they make a useful pair of cameras. I'll go further and state that if you want the Leica look but at a fraction of the price, you can't go wrong with the GX8 and the Leica badged Lumix lenses.

Of course, if Leica comes to their senses and gives us either an interchangeable Q, or at least a Q with a 50/1.7 then that would be ideal but until then as a pair of event cameras these two work well together.

Beautiful photographs, Louis. Please give my congratulations to your son and his beautiful wife. I'm becoming very tempted from what I hear and see of the Q;  like you, I have a bad back and lugging my M-P240 together with a couple of lenses around most of the day at the Leica Forum Meet on Saturday was just too much.

I very much enjoy my Q paired with the GX8 and 42.5mm f1.2 Nocticron lens.   You can do quite a lot with a 28 and 85mm (equiv) combo, and they even share the same battery which has made packing for trips a bit easier.  Another nice bonus with the m4/3 camera is that long telephoto lenses are pretty small and cheap.  For example, you can pick up the 45-175 zoom for under $200 commonly, and have up to 350mm equiv reach for those random compressed landscape shots etc, and it hardly takes any room in the bag, especially compared to a similar range APS-C or DSLR zoom.

George, each time I use the Q I am astonished at the quality of the files. The sharpness wide open is just astonishing. My daughter in law's hair and eyelashes are pin sharp at 100%. And of course the look of the files, even in raw are just wonderful. I am thinking again about buying a M and some range finder lenses but I think I want to hold off and see if Leica introduce a companion product in the next year. Having AF but manual aperture is ideal. You don't have to worry about focus and you can concentrate on depth of field and speed.

It is a small point but the battery interchangeability is a nice bonus. If you look at the build of the GX8 and the Q there are some interesting similarities. Leica have definitely benefited from partnering Panasonic, even if Panasonic have completely ripped off their lens designs(!). The Nocticron is on my radar.
