Erwin Puts predicts a masterpiece Summicron, but what focal length?

Erwin Puts states on his site:

 

"A lens that could become the masterpiece of the digital age is a proposed eight element Summicron lens, that exists on the drawing table only and should deliver stunning performance."

 

Would this be a 35mm or 50mm lens?

It's probably a 28/26 or 35/38 (the 26 x 1.33 = 34.58 and the 38 x 1.33 = 50.54) for Digital M series cameras only.

 

I would suspect that Leica will make this move to Digital only lenses IF (and that is a big IF) they really do not plan on ever going to a full frame sensor.

 

But you never know what technology will bring out in the future. A better sensor that doesn't suffer from it limitation we now deal with.

Why would they need to make a 'digital only' lens? I'm sure any new lens will work on all M cameras, they'd be daft to do otherwise.

i predict that for many people, the new lens will be a real encouragement to grab a few pics, at least to test the lens )

I suspect this is the 50 Summicron redesign that was already considered and rejected as too expensive for the expected gain. I suspect they have found a way to optimise it and make it more affordable to make, while giving it a worthwhile performance boost over the old version.

 

That is, *if* there is one on the way at all.

The only Summicron I'd be interested in would be a 24mm... Most of all, I'd like a lens which doesn't have to go back to have the focussing fixed as a rite of passage after you've bought it and one which doesn't focus shift when you stop down.

I agree with Mark, it's time for Leica to build a low light ultra wide lens. Another 50 cron will only bore the pants off everyone no matter how good it is.

The 24mm f/2.8 is already huge. I doubt they will make a Summicron, but never say never.

 

Mark, I doubt that Leica will ever again make a lens with significant focus shift. Digital is here to stay, and this is a lasting problem which Leica will have deal with if they want to retain their reputation as the world's pre-eminent lens maker.

 

In fact, I would go so far as to say that dealing with the problems of focus shift in the lenses where it occurs is likely very high on their list of priorities. I personally expect that we will see a reworked 35 Lux Asph, or at least a modified production method where they can guarantee that every single copy has no significant focus shift.

To do that they might have to tie the aperture to some type of moving element. Not sure if that can be done.

I fully understand the problem which isn't that noticeable in SLR AF cameras because the focus point is after the lens and with non AF lenses because you are looking through the lens and can see when it goes out of focus.

24/2 would be to big and to expensive unless it was a 1.33 crop only lens. I doubt Leica will make an M8 only lens.

 

The 28/2 doesn't need updating.

 

The 35 focal length is probably used as much as the 50 on film M's and is a normal lens on the M8. It has some tough competition now from Zeiss and CV. So a 35/2 that really raised the bar without busting the bank would be good.

 

The Leica 50/2 has traditionally been the benchmark lens for all 35mm lens. So I would not be surprised if Leica had been working on a new 50/2 standard bearer.

 

The 28/2 and 50/1.4 preASPH duo is my basic M8 kit. I am tempted by the 50/1.4 ASPH but the preASPH is so nice I'm in no hurry to replace it. A 50/2 that was smaller, less expensive and a better performer then the 50/1.4 ASPH would be even more tempting though.

Five years between posts. Bet it doesn't take another 5, or even close, to see a new 35 Summicron.

 

I'm still waiting for the weather sealed versions to appear in conjunction with a sealed M. But I won't hold my breath on either.
