SD Card compatibility issue?

I don't get what all this angst is about. Every digital M has had SD card issues at the first release. Sometimes it's corrected in firmware and sometimes it's corrected by what cards we choose and sometimes it's not corrected at all.

Leica M is a unique animal, it's flaws included. Better to share what cards that work (or don't work) than whine about something you can't change.

I believe (maybe I am too naive ) that customers can change things by giving honest feedback and constructive criticism. I love the M system, its simplicity, compactness and optical and mechanical qualities. I will keep on being a Leica customer in the future. I use my Leicas professionally ( I am a visual artist )  and  made a big effort to get my equipement ( not rich by any means), and I think that Leica´s electronics and software should be improved. I care about my tools and I believe that by giving honest feedback we, as  customers help Leica to be a better company. Just a symbiotic relationship.

Yes, you are a bit naive. In the Leica world the difference between a beta tester and an early adopter is the NDA. Another minor difference is that the early adopter has expectations of a fully functioning camera, whereas the beta tester expects to find issues.

A few examples: M8- IR, M9- SD card, M240- start/wake time.

All these issues were dealt with eventually to some degree, but certainly not in beta.

The point is that leica will respond to actual findings posted here in future firmware updates.

Non constructive comments will only cause the actual issues to be hidden from scrutiny (think Facebook).

First two weeks with these cards (two of them) no problems. Then crashes, slow reading, no image in LCD screen.....Is not just me. Other users reported same problems with this card. We need patience with Leica electronics...Tons of it!

Do you know or anyone else here whether the startup time is influenced by type of SDcard?

I find the M10 a magnificent camera, imagewise, but the startup time has given me already quite a lot of misses of decisive moments. In comparison to my M9(M) it feels like a doctor's waiting room, 2 full seconds!!, where the startup time of the M9 is very natural and within a timeframe that you can anticipate on, less than a second a guess.

That has been discussed for the M (Typ 240). It might be relevant to the M10 as well.

For instance: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/253899-leica-m240-co-quicker-startup-by-exfat-format/?hl=exfat

This SDcard was already formatted in exFat when I bought it, so there's no profit in re-formatting in exFat I presume

A few examples: M8- IR, M9- SD card, M240- start/wake time.

The M9 also had initial issues with red edge, cracked sensors, buffer issues, color complaints, etc. And then there was sensor corrosion.

The M240 , however, has been a comparatively robust and stable platform, with a few relatively minor teething issues. I expect the M10 to be a similarly mature product, SD card compatibility notwithstanding.

FWIW, I've had no problems using 16GB Lexar cards with both the M240 and M10.

Hmmm, it's my understanding that 8-32g cards are factory formatted fat32, and 64g and above are factory formatted exFat. You can format smaller cards exFat, but it's not the norm.

On the M240, performance/stability was improved by the use of SDformatter, even when the file structure was not changed. Also on the M240, when I formatted a 16g card as exFat all the issues were resolved. I know this isn't the M10, but there may be a few clues here, as the M10 is the same architecture.

Ok, I'll re-format then but I doubt whther this will help, startup time time of 2 seconds is in the official specs too, was hardly changeable in the M240 either. Maybe it helps with the question marks I seldom get in the thumbmarks when I zoom, that is a matter of reading speed I presume.

I tried a Kingston 128GB Ultimate SDXC (supposed to be compatible with the M10) after my 128G SDXC SanDisk failure to read SD card message. After a 7 shots the Kingston now is bricked too. The 32G Sandisk SDHC seems to be working OK.

Totally ridiculous for a $6800 camera. I don't care what any one else says.

Well.....if you own a top-notch race horse, you won't feed it with simple water :o (but I understand, it is annoying)

After 6 weeks using the M10 and having made around 1200 photos, I still have no problems with this one:

That's a nonsensical analogy. It doesn't matter how simple or expensive the water, you can't tell what the damn horse will drink. Sometimes it drinks and drinks and is fine. Other times it throws up the whole lot. There are even horses that won't drink at all even though all the other horses love the water.

In the Leica digital age a fully functioning camera is a rather naif expectation ( by early and no so early adopters ). A more realistic one is a camera without too many bugs. Still quite optimistic tough.

Hard to manage user expectations, maybe a warning label is needed?

Naive? Are you for real? SD cards are ubiquitous. Expecting them to work in a nearly $7000 camera is naive when they work in every other device I have ever used?

How did that red Leica Cool-Aid taste going down?

Good lord (little "l")

That would say what?

"Achtung! Your SD card may or may not work. Es macht nichts!"

Too bad it's not just SD cards that are having issues.

Warning: product is still in beta, please report all issues...

Sorry to say that has been the reality of early adopters. I've gone through it with M8, M9, M240...

Red cool-aid, ain't that the truth...

I have to make a correction to what I have written before ... after about 50 photos also the SanDisk Ultra SDHC, 80 Gb/s, 32Gb has begun to fail (the SanDisk Extreme SDHC, 90 Mb/s, 32 Gb did't work from the beginning) and I have lost a dozen of photos (not written on the card, just appears the number). Beautiful or disgusting that they were this leaves me very puzzled, if I want to be soft ...

I'm not talking about exotic cards made in bamboo cut off on full moon nights but about two models of one of the best-known brands that do not work with my M10.

I have read justifications and invitation to constructive criticism, but after this I do not know what to think... (again if I want to be soft)

If you're carrying around the camera while shooting, no need to turn it off. Also recommend setting the sleep time to 10 minutes or OFF. This should solve your problem. Also try different SD card, you are correct it should be less than 2 seconds...
