Hello!

This is my first post to this forum and what better way to start it off but with asking for thoughts about a M3 with a 50/2 Dual Range Summicron I have the opportunity to buy locally. I currently have an M6 with a Zeiss 35mm 2.8 that I love, but I have been eyeing an M3 for quite a while.

I only got a brief look at it the other day and was able to handle it for about a minute or two before I had to go. The viewfinder seems bright with a little dust and it seems to focus properly ( non of this is 100% since I was only able to spend a little time with it). I cant really remember what shape the metal of the body was in but I do know that the the leatherette will need replaced.I also did not have a chance to inspect internals or shutter speeds. The lens seems good and clear as well, no goggles though. It is a single stroke late model.

I will be going back by today to pick up some film and plan to take a better look at it and hopefully take some pictures. The asking price for both together is $600.00, Is this something that I should not pass up? I will post pictures once I take a second look at it.

Thanks!

Welcome.

The forum rules don't permit valuations and for good reason.

Condition is a major factor with Leica pricing. You can research selling prices by searching ebay and clicking the sold items box, then compare with similar condition items to the ones you're looking at. Also look at dealer websites but bear in mind their prices will be higher and will include some sort of warranty.

I would jump on that deal, then send both out for a CLA at one of the recommended places on this board (I use Youxin Ye).  CLA cost should be $3-500 for both combined, including the re-cover. So, an outlay for you of about $1,000.  That's a great price for two classics in what will be good condition.

I will say that, at that price, the lens may have hazy glass with some fungus. A CLA can get rid of a lot of it, but it will never be perfect.

Good Luck.
