Baffin Island from 35000'

Had good luck with weather and visibility from a 787.  The fjord in the center of the picture contains several world famous climbing faces, including the Polar Sun Spire, a 4000' face first climbed in 1996 -- 3 men, 36 days.  The area has at least 10 walls over 1000 m high, attracts not only climbers but also base jumpers and couloir skiers.  Extremely difficult to reach, and rather inhospitable climate.  To my surprise, the lead cabin attendant on our flight had climbed and guided there

Amazing views Scott!

Can I ask which flight offers such spectacular scenery? Is it international or a domestic Canadian route?

United has a nonstop between Tel Aviv, Israel and San Francisco.  The westbound route goes on the great circle path or perhaps a bit north of it to avoid headwinds, reaching 75 degrees north over Greenland, well north of Baffin Island.  Going eastbound, they fly a bit more to the south and pick up tailwinds of as much as 100 mph.  This picture was taken over the middle of Baffin Island at about 70 N.  The flight uses a 787, and all the windows are turned deep blue to let people sleep, but this time I found that the cabin crew is capable of unlocking an individual window, so I had a clear view.  Domestic routes inside Canada go more direct (on a Mercator map) and would not get as far north.  Vancouver to Moscow might cover some interesting ground.  New York to Tokyo is probably the best direct route for seeing the arctic (if the route shown below is allowed by international politics -- a Korean airliner was shot down along it years ago.)

Thanks very much Scott. This inspired me to check out global air traffic maps and according to this one the most polar route is between New York and Beijing. Check out how far north it goes!

For better or worse there are no routes that go anywhere near Antarctica.
