Why couldnt M10 be lighter.....

It is heavy...and very dense. But I don't have a problem with this, I actually like it.

IMO, one of the best built Leica's ever...it just oozes quality and you can tell it was hand assembled with pride.

I am extremely impressed with this M10, Leica has been listening to us, and they hit a home run.

The Leica man says in a French review quote that they could have made it lighter (by using magnesium alloy, etc) but that it would have felt less solid and less steady in the hand.  (Sounds like marketing speak but who knows?)

Oh! I know they were really anguishing about this, but it simply wasn't possible, there's so much in there!

My feeling is that it's only around 100gms difference between this and the lightest film M, and even though I'm an old man, and fundamentally weak and feeble, 100gms I can handle!

I bet if they removed the film style base plate and replace with traditional battery cover, change to anodized aluminum or even better, carbon fibre, that would take 100 grams off just like that. M 262 is 600 grams so why is Brass really needed ?

My feelings, too. The weight of the M is just right to help counteract a mild tremor.

I started this page in November 2015

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/252591-new-leica-m-in-september-2016-the-speculations/?p=2927941

and a follow up in september 2016:

It was nice to read the pages back, now with the hindsight we got from the last days.

What bothered me a little is, that so many reactions are as if a lot of us are disappointed or does it only look this way?

Didn't we get what we asked for by Leica. IMHO they certainly listened to us and I have the idea, that they read threads like these.

What I also notice is, that so many have a distinct opinion about it already without feeling the camera, because they did not had the opportunity to hold it.

« Nous pourrions développer un boîtier plus léger, avec un capot supérieur en magnésium par exemple », décrit M. Daniels. « Mais outre notre positionnement haut de gamme qui implique l'usage de matériaux nobles comme le métal, le M10 offre un poids "juste" qui apporte plus de stabilité, ce qui est important quand on travaille en basses lumières ».

OK, what's in there that weighs more than M262, and must weigh more than M262?

For those that like a heavy camera, this looks great. Offered a choice between a 600 gram M10 and a 400 gram M10, I know which most working pros and traveling enthusiasts would choose.

Just like the many of the lenses, maybe there can be a light version someday.

I think Leica should make M with CF top and bottom covers to shed weight. With a choice of heavy bottom cover accessory for people who want heft.

Everybody is happy. :)

I see that it's still brass. Well, they do get sexier.....

How could I part with that? It was LN in January 2014!

Plus it's lighter than M10 ;)

Now there is sarcasm.

The guy complains of the weight and then put a never-ready case over his chubby sluggish camera.
