stump4545 Posted January 21, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Love the new M10 specs but it is still pretty heavy. Why couldnt it be as light as an M9 or even lighter? Then it would be perfect. Slimmer is better but anyone else here wisher it was at least M9 light? Maybe in a future edition...... Advertisement Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Hi stump4545, Take a look here Why couldnt M10 be lighter...... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
digitalfx Posted January 21, 2017 Share #2 Posted January 21, 2017 It is heavy...and very dense. But I don't have a problem with this, I actually like it. IMO, one of the best built Leica's ever...it just oozes quality and you can tell it was hand assembled with pride. I am extremely impressed with this M10, Leica has been listening to us, and they hit a home run.
jrp Posted January 21, 2017 Share #3 Posted January 21, 2017 The Leica man says in a French review quote that they could have made it lighter (by using magnesium alloy, etc) but that it would have felt less solid and less steady in the hand. (Sounds like marketing speak but who knows?)
stump4545 Posted January 21, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted January 21, 2017 I think they the saving the lightness for a future M10 version. the only other thing I wish they got rid of is the bottom plate of camera, what a pain. I think they could have finally came up with a better solution to remove battery and SD card. just saying.
georg Posted January 21, 2017 Share #5 Posted January 21, 2017 Brass is needed for high quality chrome finish. Maybe anodized aluminium will be offered as an option someday
iaeaix Posted January 21, 2017 Share #6 Posted January 21, 2017 Heavy is not a negative for most M users I guess, the M10 looks really nice, nicer than M240 for sure. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
NB23 Posted January 21, 2017 Share #7 Posted January 21, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brass!! Nothing else will ever do.
pop Posted January 21, 2017 Share #8 Posted January 21, 2017 The heavy M. I stopped using my Nikon SLR and bought an M instead. Heavenly bliss, the thing was so much lighter than the Nikon.
Paulus Posted January 21, 2017 Share #9 Posted January 21, 2017 It's the same size as an MP, it looks a little bit like an MP , so it's 75 grams heavier. Is this really a reason to complaint? Don't buy chrome lenses, I would say...
jonoslack Posted January 21, 2017 Share #10 Posted January 21, 2017 Oh! I know they were really anguishing about this, but it simply wasn't possible, there's so much in there! My feeling is that it's only around 100gms difference between this and the lightest film M, and even though I'm an old man, and fundamentally weak and feeble, 100gms I can handle! LocalHero1953 Posted January 21, 2017 Share #11 Posted January 21, 2017 Hi Jono - do you know if they considered a machined alloy body for the M10 (no brass)? (like the T or SL, but in an M shape)
Tmuussoni Posted January 21, 2017 Share #12 Posted January 21, 2017 I bet if they removed the film style base plate and replace with traditional battery cover, change to anodized aluminum or even better, carbon fibre, that would take 100 grams off just like that. M 262 is 600 grams so why is Brass really needed ?

The weight of the M is just right to help counteract a mild tremor.
Paulus Posted January 21, 2017 Share #14 Posted January 21, 2017 I started this page in November 2015 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/252591-new-leica-m-in-september-2016-the-speculations/?p=2920917 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/252591-new-leica-m-in-september-2016-the-speculations/?p=2927941 and a follow up in september 2016: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/264723-new-leica-m-240-follow-up-in-2017-the-speculations/?p=3115263 It was nice to read the pages back, now with the hindsight we got from the last days. What bothered me a little is, that so many reactions are as if a lot of us are disappointed or does it only look this way? Didn't we get what we asked for by Leica. IMHO they certainly listened to us and I have the idea, that they read threads like these. What I also notice is, that so many have a distinct opinion about it already without feeling the camera, because they did not had the opportunity to hold it. jrp Posted January 21, 2017 Share #15 Posted January 21, 2017 « Nous pourrions développer un boîtier plus léger, avec un capot supérieur en magnésium par exemple », décrit M. Daniels. « Mais outre notre positionnement haut de gamme qui implique l'usage de matériaux nobles comme le métal, le M10 offre un poids "juste" qui apporte plus de stabilité, ce qui est important quand on travaille en basses lumières ». http://www.01net.com/actualites/leica-m10-prise-en-main-et-rencontre-avec-l-equipe-de-developpement-1086051.html
pico Posted January 21, 2017 Share #16 Posted January 21, 2017 This obsession with camera weight reminds me of a body delusion thing.
uhoh7 Posted January 21, 2017 Share #17 Posted January 21, 2017 Oh! I know they were really anguishing about this, but it simply wasn't possible, there's so much in there! OK, what's in there that weighs more than M262, and must weigh more than M262? For those that like a heavy camera, this looks great. Offered a choice between a 600 gram M10 and a 400 gram M10, I know which most working pros and traveling enthusiasts would choose. Just like the many of the lenses, maybe there can be a light version someday.
jmahto Posted January 22, 2017 Share #18 Posted January 22, 2017 I think Leica should make M with CF top and bottom covers to shed weight. With a choice of heavy bottom cover accessory for people who want heft. Everybody is happy.
