battery life?

Okay okay - if you are shooting the camera as a rangefinder, without the EVF, and shooting at a reasonable rate, then you can get 600 shots - if you use live view and the EVF - have sleep mode set to off and shoot occasionally you might only get 100 shots.

Good news is that the battery indicator is excellent and the warnings sensible, and it keeps on shooting reliably until the battery is dead.

. . You need to be prepared - but it's not a big deal

Thanks for that Jono.

But it can be a big deal since you could easily need to buy a bundle of new batteries in order to be prepared if you don't always use the camera in the most efficient way possible.

I called it an expensive nuisance and it does feel like that to me from the way you describe it, even if there are more important things to think about!

TBH it doesn't sound enormously different from the M240 to me, but given the number of variables I suspect you'd have to use both to tell if there was a noticeable difference for the way you work.

Two batteries have always been necessary and sufficient for me for both the M240 and SL.

However, compared to the $195 cost for the M 240/262 battery (B&H prices), a spare M10 battery costs $95 (B&H web site).

Makes one wonder whether USD$95 is a wholesale price (accidentally published) and USD$175 retail, with the higher mark-up on accessories.

Pure speculation, though.

Well, buying three spares won't be cheap that's for sure.

Someone I know asked me last week if I knew anyone who could repair her camera. The shutter was stuck open. It was a three or four year old Canon p&s and I looked it up online. It's new price was about the same as one of these batteries. She felt it was a great shame that a camera as "new as this" and "a good one too" couldn't be used anymore.

It made me think.

Yes, we Leica shooters take these high prices for granted...

I looked at the battery yesterday for the 1st time as am ordering an M10. If anyone saw a lower published price previously, it was likely a pre-release pricing error by the store, and Leica prices do seem to "jump" randomly as in the case of the TL 23mm lens i had in my shopping cart for a few days at B & H.

The day i added to my cart, it was $1395, 2 days later went to pay and it had jumped to $1850, this was 2 weeks ago, right after Jan 1 rolled around. I was able to get the original lower price but had to move quickly.

...additionally, the Leica Q battery, which seems to be of a very similar spec and type as the new M10 costs $95.00 at B & H.

I am very happy with my Leica products and have drunk the kool-aid, however, it does seem that there is an air of price "gouging" where and when they feel their marketplace can tolerate it.

Indeed.

The latest battery for the Canon 5D IV, using similar technology and probably a similar manufacturer, costs USD$65 for the branded battery and USD$35 for the generic.

Now, the M10's battery will not enjoy anything like the economies of scale of the Canon, but that alone can't explain the 170% higher price.

Some large part of that must be thanks to printing the "L-word" on the product.

The Q's $95 battery, made in China by the Japanese firm Panasonic, is the same battery as the battery made to fit Panasonic Lumix (and Leica D-Lux) cameras at half that price. Wasabi sells their generic battery for around $20 each.

Turn off LV and turn off preview. You'll get a 1000 shots from a single battery charge. My first charge just hit 0%. Had over 1000 shots. No live view and no chimping.

That's impressive. On par or better than M240. However I would like to see other's report as well.

There is no way that the m10's battery is on par with the m240's. And impossible that it would be better. The battery capacity is 1800mah (m240) vs 1100mah (m10).

I'm getting around 300-500 shots with the same behaviour I would get easily 500-1000 shots on an m240. I'm sure it might be possible to get more but you'd have to be really battery conservative in a way you wouldn't have to on an m240.

I'd like to see Fireboy's experience replicated.  I have no reason to disbelieve him, but would like to see others experience as well...no chimping, review off for a fully formed battery.

Possibly the new M10 has much lower electrical draw, and so the camera gets more images on a lesser battery...unlikely, but possible?

It's based on my own experiences with the camera as well as the physics of it, as well as other reviews that I've seen of the camera (most say the m240 has about 1.5x more shots/battery than the m10).
