So how long before video capture functionality arrives?

So, at 110º  in the outback you are going to carry an M and lenses to take stills, an SL and lenses to do video, and what else?  Plus spend an additional 15000 $ on a system you would only use for the occasional video clip...

I admire your dedication.

For me I don't want my M to be a do everything camera. I would rather it do what it does extremely well (be a great still camera with a rangefinder OVF) and I think the M10 will do that. If I want a camera for the studio, then I think the Fuji GFX I have on order will do that better than the M ever could. If I want a small camera for video, then my Sony A7s will do that very well, and again I think it can do that better than the M ever could. I think it is very hard for one camera to do everything as well as I would like it to do. The M240 surely didn't. I don't think my Sony A7rII does either. That camera is pretty decent at a number of things, but has limitations in every area. It can shoot nice stills and has a great sensor, but the interface and the EVF are far less than optimal for my uses. It can shoot very nice 4K video, but the full frame video is less than optimal as condensing the video from a 42 MP sensor shows in the files and using the Super 35 format has its limitations as well. I like the A7s for video quite a bit better. The A7rII can shoot in the studio but it isn't a great camera for flash. So, for me I don't want a one camera solution that tries to do everything. I think that just stretches a camera too far, but I don't begrudge others wanting that.

So, if I go to Outback in 40C/110F degree heat, then I would just take the M10 and three lenses (for me that would be the WATE, the ZM 35 f/1.4, and the 90 Macro-Elmar) and I would just shoot stills. I could do that very well with that kit. I wouldn't worry about not having video. If I wanted a one camera does it all solution (which I don't), then I think my best bet right now would be the SL, but I would use it with M lenses both for video and stills. I already think it is too much to ask one camera to do good stills, video, and studio work, and I think it is far too much to expect that and it would also be small, so all things considered the SL is a great attempt at a one camera that does it all solution. For me, however, it still falls short enough in each area that I am not really interested.

I agree. I was reading an article on the very recent demise of Nikon's latest models and their media statement that talked of huge losses and lay-offs. Canon took the video ball and ran with it while Nikon stayed dormant. And now they're lagging far behind in revenue.

But I think Leica's circumstances are slightly different because their demographic is different.

 I agree.

I remember one very orthodox guy commented in DPR Leica Talk forum that partnership with Panasonic in tech-knowhow is not good. Leica should go it alone.

Its impossible for any company to not shake hands with another.

OK,can Leica produce circuit boards,LCD screens,CCD,CMOS or metals needed?

Why should we agrue what Leica offers as long as there is something for most?

I dont have Canon 5D series.but there are many happy users using still/video features. What does it prove?

I bet there are some people who drink Carling Black Label :D

Lucky for you, Leica will always provide a stripped dowm version of the M for your needs so that you can always have your M.

And for someone like jaapv, the potential is there for him to have his M too when technology advances far enough for Leica to produce a full featured M.

As I argued earlier in the thread, I think the technology is there now, and Leica may well make a successor to the M240. I think the issue is whether there is enough of a market for such a camera to justify making it and I really don't know whether there is such a market or not. Perhaps Leica does, but whether they know or not I would think their assessment of the market will be what determines whether they make the camera and not the need for additional technology. They could build a very capable successor to the M240 if they want to/think it will sell.

  • On PCs - hold down the Alt key and on the numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard, type 0176, or Alt+ 248 When you release the Alt Key, a ° should be there.
  • On Macs - option shift 8.

When I do that (ie. the 0176 option), it forces the browser to go to google's start page and then it does the degree symbol.

°    <--- the alt-248 option works.

110º

I just did it on mobile (iPhone).

Simply copy and paste. :D

110º   <--- ok this one worked...

option (or alt) shift 8

°

◘   <--- that's what pops up when I do it.

It's inevitable that technology will evolve, or has evolved, that would allow them to do it.  But you're right, and I mentioned it earlier - I don't know if the time is right at the moment.

I'm hoping they do build on the M240 line to produce halfway decent video in a single package that would also allow me to shoot stills in traditional RF.  That's my dream cam.  As it stands, the M10 is my dream camera if we're talking just stills.

Beyond that, if I needed some serious video filmmaking power, I can always fall back on my Red camera.

If the primary drawback of enabling a bare minimal video function in the M10 is that it would lead to even more complaints and bad reviews than leaving it out, maybe Leica could enable it through a secret menu item. To get the code to enable it, you need to promise not to complain.

Of course I'm forgetting conveniences like audio

haha, I love that.  A disclaimer and a contract every time you click on the video button.   :)

Leica really needs to get it right if they are going to try video again in a future M, which means they need proper engineering support on this. I've said it before on this forum that just before the M240 came out, they did an interview where they touted the upcoming M240's video as this amazing filmmaker's tool, but it was really disappointing when it came out.  I understand that the concept of video is very new to the Leica R&D team but my god they must've had a complete dingbat advising them on its development.

Well dammit, I only have my mobile and a PC laptop at home.

On an iPhone switch to the 123 part of your keyboard. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and the degree symbol will appear as an option. I expect other makes of smart phone follow a similar method of showing symbols and diacritics by pressing and holding a key. Where I am now the outside temperature is a balmy 9ºC. Another example: press and hold the e key and you'll be able to choose all the marks you can use with that letter, such as é.

There we go, grab a stick and shake it, you can guarantee Jaap will be holding the wrong end of it!

Outback?  What outback?

If I'm going somewhere hot and dry, I'm not taking a video camera, a large format camera and an M series camera and lenses, tripods and all the rest.  I'll take the SL.  Talk about inventing something to make a bad point!

Where did I say offended ? Just questioning the rationale.  As for the opposition to the M3, it was as strong or stronger, forcing Leica to build the iiig in parallel. Don't rewrite history to bolster your argument, there is enough of that around already. ;)

Ah, I didn't say you had said you were offended, nor did I say anything about people being offended by the M3 - do try to keep up, Jaap.  If you're going to contribute to a discussion (if your posts really are contribution) please try to respond to what is actually being said.  If anyone is an expert at rewriting history, it's you (how perfect was the EVF for the M(240) when released?).

Pfft!
